Trump Purchases Doonbeg in Ireland
By Torleif Sorenson on 2/11/14

Architect Greg Norman has taken a "path of least disturbance" approach to his course designs,
including at the spectacular Doonbeg course in western County Clare, Ireland.

The Trump Organization announced just hours ago that they have purchased Doonbeg Golf Club and the attached lodge, located in County Clare, Ireland. The course will be renamed Trump International Golf Links, Ireland. The sale closed on Saturday, February 8.

Donald Trump has either purchased or developed 15 courses already; the famous "Blue Monster" at Trump National Doral just re-opened on February 6, following a major reconstruction overseen by architect Gil Hanse. Doonbeg will be the 16th golf course in the Trump portfolio, but long before Mr. Trump bought it, Doonbeg was ranked the "#1 Resort in Europe" by Condé Nast Traveler magazine. Norman's course was ranked the "Best New International Golf Course" of 2002 by Golf Digest, while Golf Magazine once had it ranked in their top 100 in the world.

This genuine seaside links course was designed by Greg Norman, who is becoming highly respected as an architect, in part because of his "path of least disturbance" approach to building courses:

Doonbeg has flown "under the radar" somewhat, but with the purchase by Mr. Trump and the increased profile and inevitable publicity, the resort's 250 employees are likely to be considerably busier than they were before. And given its location in County Clare, some 45 minutes from Shannon Airport (Ireland's third-busiest), the local economy should benefit tremendously.

Whether or not you like Mr. Trump and his style, it is difficult to ignore the fact that he has awfully good taste in golf courses.

And this writer quickly added Trump International Golf Links Ireland to his personal "golf bucket list."

Doonbeg, home to probably the meanest looking short par 3 you've ever seen.

I hate that horrible, arrogant, man with a passion I can't describe.
Torleif Sorenson says:
jpjeffery: I know that other people share your attitude, but Mr. Trump has, in the past, been very kind to golfers. Amongst other things, one of his courses hosted an LPGA Tour event and he has also contributed millions of dollars to the LPGA organization itself. I cannot ignore that.

Love the new name... original yet nostalgic, and elegantly understated.

Love what he has done with his courses. Just hate his ego and arrogance. The man just doesn't know what the word humility means. Being wealthy is one thing. being King of the World is another.

I'd change the name also, Doonbeg is too close to being Douchebag.

Lahinch and Ballybunion are nearby. What a golf trip that would be. Sorry I was never able to play in Ireland. Especially because I am half Irish. Still have relatives living in County Cork.

My grandfather was born in County Cork.
