Could You Play A Hybrid Wedge?
By Kickntrue on 12/17/08
Check out these crazy hybrid wedges I found when surfing the net this morning. They are at the tradition angles you'd see from you standard wedges but with hybrid backs.

I'm sure they exist in more than one place but the particular company I found makes the Black Magic Wedge. I'm not sure I could play these from an ego standpoint and how I'd look on the course, but I'm wondering about functionality and how they'd perform? I can see why someone would be enticed, especially if they are a "chunker" but it just doesn't make sense to me.

Would you play them? The comments are yours...

can't imagine that it works well in the sand.

Kind of reminds me of the old Lovett wedge, which I used for a while when I was struggling with bunker game and I loved it for that purpose. I couldn't hit it from anyplace else, but out of sand it was great (although you couldn't really 'open up clubface' like normal wedge).

Why not, I am regularly playing a 24 degree rescue wood out of thick rough. It's a question of maintaining face angle through the whole shot. I am not sure my ego would allow it in the bag though.

I have never worn a skirt and I will never play a hybrid wedge. Hybrid irons are bad enough

I've actually tried it out before. Some guy had them at the driving range at my home course. He prided himself on having a hybrid for every club. It hit really well off a mat, although I don't know how it would work in the sand.

It kinda reminds me of the old alien sand wedge. I bought one and it hasn't seen the outside of my storage room in I don't know how many years!

I have always struggled near the green. Very rarely did I use my traditional wedges because I was afraid of chunking, shanking or skulling the ball. My solution was to chip with a 7 or 8 iron but judging the distance was still a problem. I tried the BlackMagic wedges for the first time about 6 months ago at a local club day. I was amazed at how easy it was to get the ball up in the air. I worked with the representative for about 15 minutes, during that time he had me hitting off of tight lies, rough and even the sand. These clubs really workGǪI now carry as PW and SW! Sure I sometimes get strange looks when I pull them out of my bag but when they see the results they ask if they can give them a try. I should get a commission;)

I cant even stand when people hit hybrid irons (one hybrid is ok but it should never "replace" another club)

I have always said don't criticize something until you have tried it and I am glad that I tried this club. I ran across the Black Magic Wedge while on vacation in Florida. Until then I struggled a little bit with my short game, not anymore. I don't wear a skirt either but you will find this club in my bag because it works for me.

I can and do. And it seems like it is catching on as all the big manufacturers are coming out with hybrids. Goggle "Do hybrid wedges work?" and see for yourself.
