Tom Watson Gives You Game
By Kickntrue on 4/27/10
Tom Watson has always said he built his game around Ben Hogan's 57 year old book, Five Lessons. Tom has just released a 2 DVD set with his own life golf lessons.
Tom Watson, who at 60 continues to be competitive in major championships, reveals one secret, but mostly he sticks to solid fundamentals in his Lessons for a Lifetime, a two-disc DVD set released this week through

Hogan's book, Five Lessons, was published 53 years ago, but it was one source of information that Watson used to build a golf swing that won eight major championships and made him a premiere player on the PGA Tour in the 1980s.

A year ago he met with Terry Jastrow, a seven-time Emmy Award winner during his years as producer/director of ABC's golf coverage from 1974-1995. Jastrow has produced teaching videos and DVDs for the game's great players from Jack Nicklaus to Phil Mickelson.

"I spent three days in Kansas City getting his thoughts on the golf swing," Jastrow said. "He had clear ideas about what he wanted to say."
It's always interesting when someone like Tom Watson does something like this. Let's be honest, most golf help DVD's are jargon and junk. Some may help but in general they are a category overloaded with different variations of the same thing and tips and "secrets" with breakthrough moves, from people who generally can't play as well as the pros they claim to influence. When Phil Mickelson's short game DVD came out a few years ago I actually heard stories of players watching and it and picking up tips that improve their games. Someone even won for the first time on Tour and attributed his new success to Mickelson's DVD. I'd have to think Watson falls more into this category.

I'll still be saving my money, but Watson claims to have put all of his golf knowledge in the DVD set, keeping no secrets to himself. Someone buy it and let me know what you think. You can get the two DVD set for $49.95.

Ben Hogan's book totally changed my game. I went from a 25 handicap to a 13 in a few months. I read it again every time I'm ready to play for the season. Also, I think Tom's "secret" is to "keep your shoulders level through the swing". I saw him reveal it in a video somewhere.

I hope to get some of those secrets this weekend when I watch him put on a free clinic here in KC for junior golf. Looking forward to meeting him and seeing that great swing up close.

i'm also a strict follower of "5 Lessons" because Ben Hogan doesn't hide what you're actually supposed to be doing with jargon or through anecdotes (like Harvey Penick). very straight forward and thorough which was perfect for me.
