Who Wants To Try It First?
By Kickntrue on 5/3/10
Have you guys seen the new Odyseey Backstryke Putters? I hope they make everything, because holy crap they are ugly!
It's a good thing Callaway and Odyssey have a good Tour Staff. Because of that fact- they were able to get endorsements from Arnold Palmer and Dave Pelz. I noticed the best they could do on actual people who play golf for a living was Matthew Goggin and Graft Kraft.
I'd be a hypocrite to not appreciate an advance in technology- so I'm not saying these don't work. I'm just saying they'd better, because if I'm going to carry one I need to have a reason to ugly up my look. Then again... they're probably not much worse than any other mallet (can you tell I'm not a mallet guy?). Then again, my putter average for my last 20 scores is 1.97 putts per hole, so maybe I should think about picking one up.
What do you guys think?!

I can't stand mallets either, but something about this makes sense to me. I'd live to try one, but it would take a lot to get me away from my yes putter.
I've tried mallets and I just don't like 'em, so no I don't think I even want to try it. and my stats are right there with u, 1.94 thats the only stat I have thats worse than the oob average. I'll just keep practicing.
I am a mallet guy (by necessity, not choice), and even I don't like these. I think I get the idea that it promotes an upward strike on the ball. I can't see how it would be easier to keep the face square with the shaft so far away from it and on a seemingly small leverage point as compared to the face. Seems like you'd get a lot of twist or have to work hard to keep it square.
Putting has always been my nemesis on the course, but I just switched (last week) back to my blade putter from my Rife Mallet. I left some putts shorts but felt 'better' about my misses especially on shorter length putts - inside 15 feet. Most ended up being tap-in's which feels much better then 5-6 ft comeback putts.
I changed from blade to mallet about two years ago and have putted much better. Not sure about the physics on this one though, it just looks like the face would be less stable.
Bryan K says:
Well...I play the Odyssey white steel two-ball blade putter, and I have some really great round with it. So I know that those days where I suck on the greens, the problem is me...not the putter.
I tried the Odyseey Backstryke at Dick's last week and it did not fit my stroke, but I fell in love with the Ping Wack-e putter. It rolled very true.
Looks interesting to me. Wouldn't mind trying one but it just a bit pricey when nothing is wrong with my current putter.
oooh 1.97 would be nice to have!
I'm game for this putter does that mean your gonna buy me one?
tried its like u cant get the face flat on the ground feels like a 7.5 loft (comming from a twelwe year old)
I saw these when i was in Downingtown for the GCAT Downingtown open. I hit a few practice putts with it and i didn't like the way it felt coming through the ball. As it is, i use an Odyssey Divine 2ball mallet so i'm well accustomed to mallet putters, but for the life of me, i just can't like anything about a putter that looks like that. it's just unnatural looking and unnatural feeling. I should mention too that it took some getting used to as far as looking at it. I was hammering putts by the target because i think subconsciously i was expecting to contact the ball where the shaft met the clubhead -- 2.5 to 3 inches behind the face - so i was slamming some putts till i got used to it. weird.
Tom Watson was playing with one of these very recently. Don't know if it's still in his bag, but he isn't a Callaway/Odyssey staff player.
Looks don't matter if the putts go in, right?
