New Nike SQ MACHSPEED Black Driver
By Kickntrue on 11/8/10
The Nike SQ MACHSPEED Black driver is available for purchase on November, 26, 2010. I'm going to play with it right now!
Available at retail November 26, 2010, the Nike SQ MACHSPEED Black Driver has two 460cc round and square heads and features a sleek black profile to ensure that the air moves quickly and cleanly over the club head with each swing. Through optimal aerodynamics (360° air flow across the drivers), the Nike SQ MACHSPEED Black generates faster club head speed by reducing drag.

A deeper face allows for the delivery of greater ball speed across the face resulting in greater distance on off center hits. The face of the club head is tall and tapers quickly, enabling more forgiveness. Also differentiating from its predecessor, the SQ MACHSPEED, is in the performance of ball flight. The SQ MACHSPEED Black produces a lower ball flight and lower spin rates than the original SQ MACHSPEED, thus helping to create longer drives.
Here's what's not in the press release- this thing looks HOT! All black, absolutely no marks on the club whatsoever. It just looks good in and out of the bag. I figure it will only help if it also pounds the ball. I'm going to find out right now- I'll let you know.

Mostly- I just wanted to rub it in that I'm playing with something that doesn't come out yet for 20 days! Look for a full review soon.

I saw this and want the rounded version badly. Also it's nice to see a new driver come out that doesn't cost $500 right off the bat.

hmm pay $400 in 20 days or $150 in 385 days. People love the McRib because that nasty pork slury that gets injected in to a mold to make it look like it has bones only comes around every few years. If new drivers came out every few years I might get excited enough to get one but nothig pisses me off more than finding out after a half season the price of that shiny new driver has been reduced $200 and comes with a digital camera and a hat. I could have just been topping my old FT-5 the first 8 rounds of the year saved $200, been able to sport a sweet new hat and been able to spy on my neighbors with the promotional camera. I hate Monday.

Well- I'm back- it was a very quick 9 holes- but early reports are positive. The biggest "news" as far as I'm concerned- was that the "Nike Sound" was gone. That Shotgun sounding booiunnng. Replaced with a more pleasant sounding "ping." I'm sure Nike Golf would rather me use a different word to describe it than that- so I'll work on my synonyms for when I write the review. Very awesome though. Definitely going to get lost in my garage/golf bag.

Once you have tested the Machspeed, let us kow about the sound of the club striking the ball. It seems to me that the latest Nike offerings all have a distinctive "clang" sound. Personally, I don't like the sound and would find it hard to play a club with an unpleasant tone. Picky? Yes, I will admit this is picky. However, club designers actually work on the sound qualities. Someone at Nike decided to make their clubs "clang" and I think that person is tone deaf.

@bkuehn1952- interestingly timed comment- see above- i beat you to it. Definitely a different sound- and no not so picky. I think that's a legit concern.

Ignore my question about the sound. Thanks for the info.

@bkuehn1952 - I used to play the 2007 Cobra LD-Speed and that thing was ear-piercing off of the tee, literally. So, the sound thing isn't picky at all from my perspective. I like the results from the Cobra, the sound maybe not so much.

Playing the S9-1 now which a little better, but nothing like my playing bud's Taylor Made tour burner.

I play a Nike Sumo and the sound does leave something to be desired. Sounds sort of like an aluminum baseball bat. But I don't care too much, it's quite forgiving and long too. This new model looks very sharp and all, but who cares! I for one am tired of the constant parade of expensive newfangled drivers. I'd still be playing a Nike Ignite if only the shaft hadn't crapped out on me.

i love the black look, one of the main reasons i bought the tour burner, all black jack! this looks like it would jump out the bag and kick my playing partners ass!

If Batman golfed this would be his Driver.

I still play the 2007 Cobra LD-Speed and it does shriek of the tee. I actually like that because it intimidates my playing partners -- sounds like the ball goes a lot farther.

@Kickntrue-I see you started the round great with GIR, what happened at the end? Was it the driver?

Kickntrue says:
@rmumph1- I started the round "for real" then ended up getting involved in some other stuff I was doing (reviewing about 3 items while also testing Android app) and ended up not really playing after 3 or 4 holes.

So when does a guy (you) go out just freaking smack it for fun!? C'mon man, take out the 'black beauty' and just cut-loose on a few off the tee - us Oober's can wait a couple hours - go enjoy that thing!

@Kickn - You say the "clang" sound is gone that was inseparable from the other Nike clubs. I'm curious as to what loft it is. Is that picture the actual club? 10.5? Just curious because i noticed (at least with the tour burner) that the sound is different between the 9.5 and 10.5 lofts. I don't know why, and I tested two different clubs of each loft and had the same result (so no cracks, etc). Weird. Just wondering if the "clang" will come back on a 9.5.
