Ping S55 Irons
By Torleif Sorenson on 10/1/13
Multi-material irons are becoming popular in some golf circles, but with their new S55™ irons, the people at Ping are going after better players. CNC-milled from 17-4 stainless steel, the S55 heads feature very little offset, a smaller head, and a thin top-line for players who want to work the ball. But the shot-improvement features are highlighted by a tungsten weight in the toe (above, right) for a higher MOI, while the T-shaped stabilizing bar is geared toward distance control. A thermoplastic elastomer "tuning port" is hidden behind the muscle bar for a lower CG and higher launch angles.
The S55 irons are available in both right-hand and left-hand in 3-iron (21º, 0.17" offset) through 9-iron (41º, 0.05" offset) with D1 swing-weight, and PW (46º, 0.03" offset, D3 swing-weight). The stock shafts are Ping's CFS steel (soft regular, regular, stiff, X-stiff), Ping Z-Z65 steel shaft in stiff flex (manufacured by True Temper), and the TFC 189I in graphite (soft regular, regular, stiff).
In their press release, Ping says that Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and Ángel Cabrera have already switched to the S55. The company quotes Mahan thusly:
"After the first swing, I knew the S55 was going in my bag, no question. I love the control, the trajectory and the forgiveness. It's everything I want in a golf club."The S55 irons are available for orders beginning today, while the clubs are expected to hit retail stores early in November. The U.S. MSRP is $138.75 per club in steel shafts; $166.25 per club in graphite.

I am stoked to see these in person - they look awesome on paper!
so they finally made Bubba switch from his S59's?
Really! "After the first swing" Wow! That cracks me up. After just one swing Hunter knew the control, the trajectory and the forgiveness of these clubs? They could have a least said after the first practice session or something like that, but after one swing, get real. Someone is definitely getting paid to promote. Don't get me wrong, I love Ping clubs, My clubs are all ping except my putter. I will give these a try when they come out and not just "one swing"
