How Did You Start Golfing?
By Kickntrue on 1/8/09
I found a great discussion in our forums on how people get started/hooked on golf.
I thought it was pretty interesting and a lot of fun. I dropped my two cents. How about you?

I had a girlfriend whose dad didn't care for me much. I went out and played a few rounds with him to earn some respect. Loving the girl didn't last but loving golf has for sure.
Tim Horan says:
I started playing golf with a shelf bracket screwed to a piece of 1" x -+" timber and a plastic ball when I was nine (I played around with lie angles even then). Then lost all interest until an injury took me out of soccer at 13 yrs. I took up golf and was given my first half set of clubs as a present. My father started playing golf shortly afterwards he says because he got tired of sitting in the car while I had golf lessons.
My Dad. I would come home on leave and he would take me out. I sucked but I went to spend time with him and have a few brewskies. I deployed overseas in '02 and had my first lesson. I've had the "bug" ever since. I wish I would have started much earlier. I have my 2 1/2 year old son playing. He played his first 9 holes in October last year and he's been holding a club since he was 10 months. He has a hell of swing already! I LOVE this game!!!
I started playing when I was 4 or 5 with my dad at the driving range...and I still suck almost 20 years later. I hate this game.
i started at age 11 i watched the 2002 US Open at Bethpage with my grandpa and he told me that he did that(as in playing golf) and i thought it was cool so he took me to go hit balls on the range with a sawed off 3 wood(it was a real wood club) and ive had the bug since
my uncle. we'd get together every once in a while on Sunday mornings (any excuse to miss church) and hit 18 together. He'd try to give me pointers and I'd sit in amazement at his ability to just keep it in the fairway.
i started at the age of 4 when i saw the leaderboard of a pga tournament in 1998 and i saw tiger woods and fuzzy zoeller. I thought these were cool nicknames and i wanted to get one so I went and played and 10 years later i ended up a 2.8 handicap.
After years of refusing to play with my dad, not a violent enough activity, I started playing with an old (older than me, at the time) set of Glass Shafts, at the ripe old age of 32. This was mainly due to after my 7th knee surgery, I could no longer do anything else. Biggest regret, never getting the opportunity to play with him. Hcp has been from 30 to 13, and currently 17.
my dad got me into it. Started playing when I was 10 or so. Took some lessons went to a golf camp which was fun. Got away from the game during jr. high and high school due to other activities. Then about 10 years later, I decided to head out to the driving range. Been hooked ever since.
I played on and off since I was a kid with my Grandfather. I didn't get the golf bug and start taking it serious until last JUNE. It was shortly after a golf scramble at work. Wish now I would have gotten the bug sooner, so I could have spent more time on the golf course with my Grandfather. So now at the age of 32 I can't seem to play enough golf.
Well I played a few rounds right after High School just so I could ditch work for work sponsored golf tournaments. After joining the military, I didnt play for the first 8 Years, then I had neck surgery and was told no more contact sports so I had to find something to keep me active. I turned to Golf and have been hooked ever since. I started with some wally world clubs, and when I broke 100 the first time I upgraded, now almost 6 years later, I just upgraded my irons again, and have a handicap under 13. My goal is to get to single digits. I guess when life takes you from things you like, it opens you up to things you will like if you give it a chance. I hate this game, but cant imagine doing anything else in my spare time.
