Giveaway Challenge: mustang6560 vs. birdieXris
By mustang6560 on 10/16/12
oober birdieXris recently issued me a challenge I simply couldn't refuse — he bet me he could break par before I break 80.

Game on, sir!

It took a couple of weeks to work out the details but we've reached an agreement and decided to involve the oobgolf community by turning our challenge into a giveaway. The terms of the bet are pretty straightforward. birdieXris has to break par on at least a par 70 golf course and mustang6560 has to break 80 on a par 72 golf course.

To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment below answering the question, Who will accomplish his goal first — birdieXris or mustang6560? I will keep a log of everyone who enters and who s/he picked to win the bet. After one of us accomplishes our goal, everyone who correctly picked the winner will be entered to win an oobgolf performance polo (with their username embroidered on it) and a FREE 1-Year Addict+ subscription.

Why you should bet on birdieXris:
I think it'd be a good bet to pick me because of my potential. While it could be argued that getting under par is harder than merely breaking 80, it's a question of needed consistency. I do believe, also, that I have the long game consistency and mental game to break par. Also, I'm a glutton for punishment and lost bets.
Why you should bet on mustang6560:
It's simple — I've flirted with the 70s several times this season and I've only been one or two triples away from breaking through. Plus, I live in the South where you can play golf nearly all year long.
I'm scheduled to play up to three rounds of golf this coming weekend so birdieXris and everyone who decides to pick him be warned!

Definetly Mustang..Remember, let the score come to you...I think it would be harder to break par as the round must be nearly perfect whereas you can still screw up some to break 80...Good luck Mustang!

Mustang needing a -3 to hcp round vs. BX needing a -4 to HCP round. Statistically the odds overwhelmingly favor Mustang. I always pick the underdog so BX is my pick.

The bowtie weather is upon us.. So be it. Bowties it is. Getting at least two rounds in this weekend. There's plenty of "golf left" as it were in lancaster, mine is a question of time and quality rounds. :)

I'm going with Birdie. His season might almost be over, but if I recall from what I've read, he has the means to travel to warmer climates. Good luck to both of you. I bet I'll be the first to break... my driver.

dtak84 says:
Going with BirdieXris. His hc is lower than mine, but I've already broken par. It's all mental to break either when you're that close, and Mustang's mental battle will be tougher.
10/16/12

bkuehn1952 says:
They both have the talent to achieve their goal. I have to go with Mustang since the weather becomes a factor in PA relatively soon and a lot of courses have aerated greens.

I say BirdieXris. When you get rollin....

I gotta bet on the 'Stang. Because even I almost broke 80 once. If I can almost do it, Mustang should be able to..

I give the nod to Nate if only because he'll probably have significantly more chances. birdiex is at a geographical disadvantage.

Torleif Sorenson says:
This is a little unfair because I've never met BX. But I *have* seen Nathan's short game.

The winner: "Mustang Sally."

I think simply going by the numbers and looking at the probability, Mustang is the safer bet.
10/17/12

They both have the capability to do it, but I think the birdie man is stronger mentally, so BirdieXris it is! Come on, man: let's do this!! :)

OK, I have to bet on BirdieXris. Chris if you would like I'd be happy to work with you on this challenge. I'll provide all the moral support you may need with any golf swing and strategy planning you may need or want.
10/17/12

birdieXris says:
@golfnutjim - thanks buddy. Gotta say, overall there's a lot more support than i was expecting here from the entire site. Lots of true statements - geographical disadvantage and statistically a little harder, but if there's one thing i know it's that i'm a delightfully inconsistent 3.3 believe me... if there aint snow on the ground and my joints aren't frozen, i'll be playing.

dukedsp says:
Gotta go with Nate. Breaking 80 is going to happen for him its just a matter of time and time is on his side in this one.

Do winter rules apply?

It's said it is easier for a 3 handicap to go through a needle...or something like that. But I'll go with BirdXris since he has been so close to breaking par. Can;t wait to see how you guys do.

Definitely Nate. I was actually surprised to learn that he's never broken 80. I have the perfect course in mind that you could probably break 80 blind folded on if your interested?? We could even invite Chris along to witness his defeat first hand!!

DougE says:
Took me all season to break 80 (78) this year on my tough home course. Can't imagine how hard it's gonna be to get to par. So many things can go wrong even if you are playing your best and you are a low single digit. Lower than BirdieX. I'm picking Mustang, but I don't doubt Chris has it in him soon.
10/23/12

DougE says:
Wait, didn't Nate already win? 77 at Colonial 10/21?
