U.S. Open Round 1 Comment Thread
By mustang6560 on 6/13/13
The first round of the U.S. Open is underway in Ardmore, Pennsylvania — well, sort of.

The first group teed off at 6:45a.m. ET, but play was suspended by 8:36a.m. ET due to severe weather moving into the area.

Ian Poulter is currently leading at -3. The Englishman birdied his first three holes before play was suspended.

If you have anything to share about the first round of the U.S. Open, share it in the comments section below.

I just read an article on ESPN that said no matter how wet the course plays, the USGA will not allow "lift, clean and place" (or "lift, clean and cheat" as Tor likes to say).

I'm curious how they will play this. I doubt they get through 1 full round before Saturday starts.

Round 1 finishes Saturday Round 2 starts Saturday and finishes Sunday. Cut and 36 holes on Monday (which is calling for rain also)? With a possible 18 hole Tuesday playoff?

I cant see the US Open getting cut to 54 holes.

If this is the only delay everything will be fine. They will get caught up.

It wont be the only delay. Supposed to get really nasty around 6 tonight. I assume 6 hour rounds of golf will be normal. So the afternoon groups wont get through 9 before it gets called for the day.

Then it is supposed to rain all the way till almost noon on Friday.

I assume it will take a couple hours to dry if not all afternoon. So the 1st round might get done by the end of Friday depending on how bad the storms are (and how much repair is needed).

I tuned into ESPN this morning knowing it was raining but at least hoping for some golf-related coverage, instead got Stephen A. Smith hollerin about Lebron and Dwayne Wade. What a terrible way to start the day.

Thre's nothing else coming their way. It's going to be smooth sailing. Probably some wet weather, maybe showers here and there, but i don't see any more delays for the rest of the tournament. It's clear and the sun's out here in Lancaster.

Phil seems to be playing some good "boring" golf... Could this finally be his year?

With the soft conditions, I think the winner will need to play a little more than boring golf to win.

Birdie I hope you're right. I was just going by what weather.com showed.

The high pressure is trying to push in and the low is going off the coast. Basically the secondary bands that are near Ohio are going to miss Merion low. They may catch the edge of some showers, but we should be good for play. Sunday is gonna get crazy. Most of that moisture should burn off and it could get a little nuts.

@mustang... by "boring" I mean keeping the ball in the fairway and hitting the green, which will win more than blasting away with driver every hole and figuring out what to do next when you get there.

Phil's golf game is like flying an airplane, Hours and hours of boredom punctuated by moments of stark terror.
