Red tees, please!
oobgolf Tee It Forward Challenge
By mustang6560 on 7/15/13
On June 18, 2013, I made an off-the-cuff remark in my piece about the 9-year-old who shot 58 in a junior golf tournament. I said:
On a separate but related note, I am tempted, for fun, to play from the red tees at Colonial (my home course) one day to see if I can break par. I highly doubt I could break 60, but I bet I could break 70.
oober legitimatebeef immediately challenged my comment saying:
Bet you five bucks you can't.
Thus, the oobgolf Tee it Forward Challenge was born.

This Sunday, July 21, 2013 I'm going to try and break 70 from the red tees at my home course, Colonial Country Club. As an 8.4, I'm fairly confident I'll be able to break 70 from the front tees.

Similar to my challenge with oober birdieXris, instead of a friendly wager between oobers, we're going to involve the entire oob community in two ways:
  1. Join the oobgolf Tee It Forward Challenge group and plan to play the most forward tees at your home course this Sunday (or any time this weekend).

  2. In the comments below, pick a side. Do you think mustang6560 can break 70 from the red tees at his home course?
If I break 70, I'll put the names of all the oobers who picked me in a virtual hat and draw two random winners who will receive a 1-year Addict+ subscription. And if I don't, I'll do the same for the oobers who picked against me. Also, the oober who joins the oobgolf 'Tee It Forward' Challenge group and shoots the lowest net score will receive a 1-Year Addict+ subscription, too, so you have incentive to join the fun!

Regardless of the outcome, this is an awesome golf experiment (one the USGA would be proud of) and I'm happy to be a part of it. I'll live score my round with oobers drewhastings12 and rgeimer (who will also be playing the red tees with me) starting around 2:00p.m. CT so you can follow along if you want.

I say you can't break 70, but hope you do.

Also any chance we can count Friday the 19th? I can't play on the weekend this week but have Friday off work and plan to play. So if we can count Friday I'll give this a shot. I always play as a single so I'm sure my playing partners will give me some strange looks when I walk up to the reds and hit a 275 yard drive lol.

mustang6560 says:
@jasonfish11: ABSOLUTELY! I updated the post.
7/15/13

rgeimer says:
Not a chance.
7/15/13

birdieXris says:
I also can't play this weekend, but i'll be able to play monday. LOL. What a weekend for this to take place. I really wanted to do it! Also, Mustang won't break 70.
7/15/13

jasonfish11 says:
On a side note. On my "home" course from the reds the 18th hole is a 307 yard par 5.

Can't wait to explain this to some random guy I'm paired with.

Should be lots of fun.
7/15/13

mustang6560 says:
@birdieXris: Play early Monday.
7/15/13

dtak84 says:
I'm going to go with... you not breaking 70. :) Good luck though!
7/15/13

birdieXris says:
OK i'll head out when the wife leaves for work.
7/15/13

SSracer says:
You'll break it. Hell, I shot a 68 at an executive course from the blues this weekend and I'm a 17.
7/15/13

Jattruia says:
Love this whole thing...but I don't think you're breaking 70.
7/15/13

slimpks1850 says:
You will break 70... is my guess.
7/15/13

Torleif Sorenson says:
I supremely confident that Nathan will break 70 from the front tees at Colonial. If he DOESN'T break 70, I promise to go an entire week without eating a single pizza.

(And at my home, that's kind of a big sacrifice.)
7/15/13

bkuehn1952 says:
Nathan's best handicap differential to date is 5.1 and based on the rating for the forward tees at Colonial (Jackson) he will need to produce a differential of 3.3 to shoot 69. So this round will need to be the best round ever shot by Nathan. Sorry Mustang, it ain't gonna happen this weekend.
7/15/13

GBogey says:
Got to go with the Beef on this one.
7/15/13

GolfSmith7 says:
Nathan's I've enjoyed watching your game improve but you'll have to put me in the camp that says you don't break it.
7/15/13

legitimatebeef says:
Haha nice one Brian. Fun with stats. Nathan, good luck this weekend. Even though its the weekend of the oldest championship in golf, I will be glued to the oob live scoring page. And even though you are going to fail, I hope you have fun trying. Because that's what it is literally, all about. Having fun. Am I right or am I wrong here.
7/15/13

Werepuppie says:
I do not think he can do it.Best of luck though.
7/15/13

Mandelbaum! says:
I say he does it. Good luck, man!
7/15/13

DougE says:
I hope you do well, but realistically, playing par golf from any set of tees on a regulation course is asking a lot, unless you are a very low handicapper or just get very lucky on that day. I have to say no way you'll break par. Just because it's shorter, the greens are the same, the bunkers are the same, the rough is the same, etc and those 2 or 3 crappy swings that sneak into every 8-10 handicapper's regular-length round from the men's tees, will still show up. It's the nature of the game. It's just as hard to get a putt to drop no matter where you teed off from, unless maybe your approach distances are so much shorter that you can hit wedge stiff on every approach or par 3. You break par and I'll sign up with Oob for another year. No cheating now ;-) Good luck.
7/15/13

Bryan K says:
I'm going to go with no. Odds say he's not gonna do it.

But I'm going to try to talk my playing partners at a local executive on Saturday into playing the front tees.
7/15/13

srogers13 says:
I say no.
7/15/13

sjduffers says:
Have fun trying, but I say you don't make it Nathan. Even though you could pick up an eagle and a few birdies, it's tough to avoid bogies for a whole round! ;-)
7/15/13

jfurr says:
Sorry Nathan, it's going to be tough to go under 70. I say no.

Also - who won the giveaway for the break 80 challenge?

I might try the tee it forward thing. My home course doesn't have red tees, they are the same (yellow tee) as the seniors so I might have to think of another suitable place to try. Hmm maybe I can travel down to Patriot's Point (where the kid shot 59) on saturday afternoon and tee it forward there...?
7/15/13

golfingbumunderpar64 says:
I've done this before on a bet that I could shoot 65. 5 under through 6 holes. Finished 5 under. Not sure if I can play this weekend but would love the chance again. Side note: srogers, played the judge in that scramble 7811 yds. It sucked. driver, driver, 3 wood into #10.
And I say not a chance breaking 70. Still have to exacute shots and make putts
7/15/13

jfurr says:
.. pardon me, where the kid shot 58 (not 59). Though I would be thrilled to break 80. Or just hit the ball straight.

Remember, you still have to putt and scramble on the top of your game even on a short course. And sometimes a short hole can bring the trouble closer...

Good luck!
7/15/13

mrcgamble says:
I say 70 will not be broken from the front tees. On a side noted I will try to talk my group on saturday morning to try this if not I may try by myself, but even as a 6 hdc. I don't think I would be able to break 70 on my home course (eastwood golf course, ft. myers, fl) may give it a whirl though.
7/15/13

bsta93 says:
I'll take the over.
7/15/13

GolfSmith7 says:
My curiosity is what is the over under, considering how short the course is, on how many G.I.R's does he hit? For him to break 70 he will have to hit at least 14. What do you guys think?
7/15/13

glenrich says:
Without knowing anything about your short game, I have to guess that the odds are against it.
7/15/13

smatthews says:
Given how bad my game has been recently, I have no room to talk, but I have to go with no sub-70 round. Mad that I can not try the tee-it-forward challenge this weekend- in a classroom all weekend.
7/15/13

planetes42 says:
Any chance you guys have room for a 4th? I just realized you're playing in my hometown! I've never played Colonial, but would love to (even if it is from the Reds). I typically play at the Randy Watkins courses.
7/15/13

hughesj says:
Don't see it happening, sorry!
7/16/13

golfking222 says:
I don't think so.
7/16/13

Matt F says:
Will not happen...Brian's math and logic is just too good to argue against.
7/16/13

toothid says:
Depends on the short game....probably NO...but enjoy the round
7/16/13

dukedsp says:
Sorry, man, can't see you breaking 70.
7/16/13

SortaAmbivalent says:
Playing from around 1000 yards shorter than you usually play and your best round on Oob is a 77. I don't see it happening, but I wish you luck.

I don't have a home course per se, but the course I play the most near my home is 2834 from the front tees. I wonder if I could beat that 9 year old ;-)
7/16/13

slimpks1850 says:
Can someone explain how to watch this on live scoring?
Thanks
7/16/13

mschad says:
Our league does this once a year. It is harder than you think.... especially on the par 3's. You are hitting from distances you are not used too.
7/16/13

Backquak says:
I shot 79 from the forward tees just playing my PW SW and putter, he can do it.
7/16/13

snkli says:
Sorry, I just don't see you breaking 70. Best of luck though.
7/16/13

legitimatebeef says:
With all this naysaying I find myself almost rooting for the Natester. I picture him printing out this page, taping it in his locker at the clubhouse, putting a towel over his head and just staring at it brooding for a while. Then he punches the locker, screams "KUEHN!!!" then goes out and pounds a few hundred range balls.
7/16/13

SteveMM says:
Not going to happen. My assumption here is that he's never played the forward tees and thus doesn't instinctively know where a well struck tee shot will land. You have to have that information to score well. On top of that, he still has to putt well for this to happen. I think he scores in the 70s, but not below 70.
7/16/13

frankteo714 says:
Wait a minute.... I love this idea.
7/16/13

skissors says:
I'm going with no.
7/16/13

legitimatebeef says:
Hey 'Stang, just to clarify, will you be playing "Jackson" or "Deerfield"? Not a big deal since they are slope/rated about the same, but I noticed that one is about 300y longer than the other.

In any case, what would be a good over/under side bet? I'd place it at 75 or so.
7/16/13

Stymie says:
it will be close. 72 or 73. But not going to break 70.
7/16/13

mustang6560 says:
Jackson. 75 would be a good side bet.
7/16/13

jasonfish11 says:
I think 75 is a good O/U. I was talking to a friend about what my O/U would be and we figured 77.5 (as an 11 handicap).

I just got told I have a meeting on Friday at work. So I wont be able to do the group thing, but I may still give this a try next friday because it still intrigues me.
7/16/13

redvines13 says:
I think Mustang will break 70 (if he does I won't have too much competition, it looks like). I'm tempted to make the half-hour drive to Victory Links, where the shortest tees play to a 2837-yard, par 71. Otherwise, it would be a fun way to play my first round at my club's new course, that is completely new this year.
7/16/13

madmx99 says:
I've seen Mustang putt. I'll lean toward a no.
7/16/13

GolfSmith7 says:
@madmx99 that's not right lol too funny!
7/16/13

legitimatebeef says:
More stats time. Let's take a look at Nate's last five 18 hole scores from the white tees at Jackson: 83, 80, 89, 93, 87. In only one of those rounds did he manage to hit more than 6 GIR or fewer than 29 putts. Discuss!
7/16/13

biglou11 says:
I believe you will get it done. Be confident, and go get it done!
7/16/13

accarson3 says:
I don't think it will happen Playing from the forward tees is not a gimme for a sub-par round...as @SteveMM says above, if you are used to playing from the back tees then you must adjust to a new course management style from the forward tees.
7/16/13

birdieXris says:
I hope i'm wrong, but i took a look at my near course from the forward tees. haha. Pretty much a par 3 course as far as i'm concerned. NO trouble to get into.
7/16/13

falcon50driver says:
As a rule, I'll score one shot less for each hundred yards shorter the course is from the usual 6300. If it helps him to hit more GIR there may be more birdie opportunities.
However DOUG E is probably correct in his assessment.
7/16/13

jeffcroupier says:
I vote against.
7/16/13

chadv99 says:
I say no way.
7/17/13

YOSH! says:
I vote for.
7/17/13

BELARUS says:
I say Nay. 74-77 is doable, but under 70 with so much pressure on - I don't think so. Have fun though!
7/17/13

Torleif Sorenson says:
Last September, I saw Nathan chip-in from off the the green *three* times in one round - including on two consecutive holes. On that second hole, his pellet was still about two feet from the hole when I said, "Are you kidding me??!!" Of course, it rolled into the jar.

Nathan just smiled like a butcher's dog. That's why I say he gets in under 70.
7/17/13

ezra_hendrickx says:
Nope.
7/17/13

dottomm says:
I'd love to see him do it. But I'm going with a No.

ezequiel clicgear says:
You are not going to break 70's
7/17/13

Geoffre14 says:
As much as I want to root for you, I think a lot of short game execution needs to happen and, unfortunately, I have to say no.
7/17/13

GolfSmith7 says:
I'll be playing at Treasurer Hills tomorrow from the shortest mens tees which is about 5400 to see how I score for this challenge. I can't play over the weekend.
7/17/13

mustang6560 says:
Good luck GS7!
7/17/13

BULL.W.E. says:
I'm going to guess you'll shave 6 shots off your average. The greens are the same size, so you won't shave much there unless your approach shots get a decent amount closer. I did that a few years ago at my home course, played a rotation of all 5 tees and never scored as well as I thought. Going with no, but good luck!
7/17/13

BULL.W.E. says:
And don't take any crap from guys reminding you that you're playing the ladies tees!
7/17/13

ybrownson says:
@mustang6560 this is a great idea... always been wondering what I can shoot from the most forward tee at my home course. I dont neither of us will break 70 this weekend, but here's to us giving it a go.
7/17/13

dc8ce says:
No way. Even from front tees, breaking 70 is TOUGH!
7/18/13

MB 2.0 says:
I think you will break 70!!

I tried it this morning and here is what took place! www.oobgolf.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3524&star

bducharm says:
Nathan, you WILL break 70 if you play with a sensible approach!!! Good luck!
7/18/13

ilovebacon says:
Not gonna happen - at best you shoot 73. As an 8.4, you'll succumb to the pressure and will not go below 70. If you played it 10 times from the red tees, you'd be able to break 70 1-2 times. It's gonna be a mental thing. Cool idea - you may need to keep playing from the reds this season until you do break it just to prove it to yourself. I'm not a golf psychologist, I just play one on oob.
7/19/13

bashworth says:
With about 33% of greens hit, ill say you shoot a 1 under par 71
7/19/13

CeeBee says:
I think the mustang can do it. The short game gods will be with him.
7/19/13

meatball413 says:
you will break 70. I am seeing a 67 in your future.
7/19/13

aletsvc21 says:
Nate, I’ve been teetering back and forth around an 8 for 2 years now and I really would like to think that I could break 70 from the reds. You got my thumbs up for breaking it. g/l

Nope

I hope you do. But I don't think it's going to happen.

KeithH says:
I think maybe 72 but I don't think you will get under 70.
7/19/13

Im going with you will break it shooting a 69. Good luck

brianmk24 says:
Going with some positive thinking for breaking 70. I forgot and played my regular tees today, but I'll play forward if I go out on Sunday.
7/19/13

mrcgamble says:
talked my group into playing and I shot 77 with a double on the last hole should have been a 75 which would be a great score from my normal tees but hit a lot of lesser clubs off of the tee box today...stats were about the same from my normal tees and forward tees.
7/20/13

simivan says:
I think the best that you would do will probably play level Par 70
7/21/13

dooboo says:
If you are 8 handicaper, I don't think you will break 70 even from front tee.
