Europe Wins Solheim Cup

The Europeans rallied late Sunday to defeated the Americans in the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2003.
Europe won the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2003 on Sunday, finishing powerfully to beat the United States 15-13 at Killeen Castle. Norway's Suzann Pettersen turned the momentum Europe's way when she recovered from 1 down with birdies at the last three holes to beat Michelle Wie by one hole.
The cup was tied 8-8 after the conclusion of Saturday’s matches at Killeen Castle. The injury to Cristie came at the most in opportune time for the American side and she said she feels terrible for having to concede the point.
"I'm devastated that I couldn't play today to help represent my team," Kerr said. "I tried my best but I couldn't hold the golf club."
To be far to Cristie, her injury was not the only thing that let down the American side yesterday. Suzann Pettersen and Azahara Munoz rallied late to win their matches against Michelle Wie and Angela Stanford, respectively, and Caroline Hedwall manged to half her match against Solheim rookie Ryann O'Toole. Oh, and Paula Creamer was absolutely destroyed by Catriona Matthew 6 and 5. So even if Cristie was healthy enough to play, the Europeans still would have won.

Obviously, I would have preferred for the American side to win, but I think it’s good for the Solheim Cup that the Europeans won because it restores the rivalry and competitiveness of the biennial event. I mean, as of late, we basically owned the cup so it was getting to the point where it was assumed we’d win.

The next Solheim Cup will be played in 2013 at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colorado.

The Americans had it coming. They need to take a good hard look in the mirror and ask themselves what's going on with US women's golf. Ok, a lame platitude but I stand by my point. There is a solid presence in the top ten but after that its a severe drop off. Christina Kim qualified for the team fair and square and she is barely in the top 100 world ranking. Its not just a matter of golf ability either, there is a personality deficiency. People drone on about unappealing Asian players but come on, can anyone name me a couple of sour-er pusses on the golf planet than Cristie Kerr and Stacy Lewis. I'd rather watch Nathan play 18 holes.

+1 beef. I particularly like how Kerr screams at her ball while it's in the air, and Lewis is just unappealing on many levels. Morgan Pressel is fun to watch for some reason.

On the other side - - 2 words - - Melissa Reid! All day long baby, yup, all day ;-)

Suzann Petterson's clutch putt at the end was longer than the one Bill Haas missed at the 72nd hole in Atlanta. I know that Ryann O'Toole botched her pitch when she basically needed to hole-out to win her match, but she went 2-0-2 -- not bad for a captain's pick.

Still, the better team won. I wonder how long we'll have to wait before Alison Nicholas is inducted into the WGHOF?
