Steve Williams Beats Tiger Woods
By mustang6560 on 8/8/11
Does David Feherty know Adam Scott is the person who won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational? Based on his post round interview with Steve Williams, I'm not sure. Or maybe, he was interviewing the true winner.

In the interview with David, Steve made the blanket statement, "I've caddied for 33 years, 145 wins now and that's the best win I've ever had". Ouch, did you get that Tiger? He was talking to you. He won seven (7!) times with you at Firestone alone, but his one victory with Adam was better.

Whether or not Adam Scott wants to acknowledge it, his victory Sunday was much bigger for Steve than it was for his career. What better way to show your old boss you're doing OK than to win with your new boss in the first competition against each other? The only way Adam's victory would have been better for Steve was if he and Tiger would have been paired together for the final round and Adam edged out Tiger down the stretch.

It's very apparent Steve is still upset up over his split with Tiger. He's kind of acting like a junior high school girl who's boyfriend broke up with her and the world is coming to an end.

I do feel bad for Adam because his eighth victory on the PGA Tour was overshadowed by the Tiger-Steve drama. His victory was very impressive. Not only did he win, but he ran away from the field carding a final round 65. We'll see if Adam can bottle up his mojo from the Bridgestone and take it into the PGA Championship this week at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

I don't mind this little "in the face" by Williams, but it def needs to end here or he just looks like a baby. Tiger is why he is what he is today... he knows it. He was jilted, but needs to remember it.

I'm in Steve's corner on this one. He deserves it. I'm still not happy about interviewing Steve before adam. I mean, adam is the golfer here. Get his thoughts then go to Steve.

Xris, Steve has the right to talk and comment...but to suggest this win was the biggest of his career is silly..., imo.

Yeah, he zinged one in on Tiger. Oh well, he's entitled to his opinion but that was his best win ever after 14 majors with his old boss?? Idk about that.

steve made more money with tiger than most players would make...i think he needs to shut his kiwi pie hole and just have some class...oh poor millionaire was strung along for a couple of difficult years...in this economy, i doubt there is much sympathy for him...

Steve has got "issues". How many times did he use the word "I"?? Judging from his interview you would think HE shot 65. If anyone was listening he said he asked Tiger if he could work with Adam and Tiger "didn't agree" with him, and he's wondering why he got fired???? No, I'm sorry,, he's "shocked" he got fired???? How do you ask your employer if you can get a part time job from your employers direct competitor, he's says no I don't think it's a good idea, you go ahead and do it anyway, and you don't expect to get fired??!!?? Where is this guy from New Zealand??? that's right, he is.

Best week of his life??? Talk about living vicariously through someone. Let's not get things twisted, Adam won the tournament because he FINALLY has started making putts, not because Steve was on the bag.

All the drama aside, I do think it's a good fit for Adam. Now Steve can be the great caddie that he professes to be, and Adam always could use a good kick in the ass to stay motivated. I wonder when Phil is going to "take a break" from bones and win a few more majors.

I know caddies play an important role for the player, but to hear Steve talk it did sound like he won the thing (he did talk Adam down to a 5 wood on the final hole which set up his beautiful iron shot to almost hole out). I felt for Scott when all you could hear from the galleries were shouts of "Stevie". It had to spoil the win a little for him.

You got fired. Deal with it and move on. Stop whining, take it like a man and move on. End of story.

elhacker says:
What would have made Steve look a lot better would be for him to say. "I have no comment on the matter. We've moved on and I'm truly happy with Adam Scott's win". As a professional caddy he should have deferred all questions to his golfer. Professional golf is somewhat of a team game but primarily an individual sport. Since when does the caddy win single handedly?

I couldn't believe they interviewed Stevie at all, even though i knew it was coming but not so fast after Adam holed out. I wonder if Stevie had something planned to say. That was a childish way to act. Its hard to believe that was the best week of his life. But good for the media to over analyze and talk about. I can't wait for Tiger's next press conference to hear his response to the comment you know someone is going to ask him about it.

Stevie did not Beat Tiger. Awful title. Adam Scott beat the field. It was an impressive win by Scott, I think i cut my handicap a couple strokes by watching him and Ryo and their near perfect swings. I was rooting for Ryo though. I didn't want to hear the crap talked about Steve beating Tiger.

I never like Steve to begin with. I've never been a big fan of Tiger, though I respect his abilities as a golfer. Now, I dislike Steve- the public persona, more than I dislike Tiger- the public persona.

Can we stop calling him Stevie? Stevie should be hanging out with Stewie in the sandbox, plotting the best way to kill Lois.

I am NOT a TW fan, and never will be. Give me Mickelson every time! I also have had a disdain for Stevie, mainly due to the way he USED to treat the gallery and his demeanor between the ropes. But, as I watched just a few holes this weekend, he sure did talk a lot more to Adam during the round than he did TW. There were even smiles and laughter between the two-- more than I remember seeing between he and TW. So, it would appear to me that Stevie is really ENJOYING his job more than when he was with Mr. A-hole himself, TW! Stevie had caddied for Ian-Baker Finch (all-around good guy...), Greg Norman, who was ALWAYS good with the galleries/media, as is Adam Scott. TW?? Not so much. So, Stevie wasn't known to be an ass until he met up with TW....

Go figure!

Rod

PS: Can't wait for the book about his time with TW that we all know Stevie will write here in another 10-15 years!I have a feeling we'll all get to see how the real TW is outside the ropes, and I'm going to laugh at all of the TW worshippers!

@birdieXris - Feherty did interview Adam Scott before interviewing Stevie. He probably shouldn't have interviewed Stevie at all - or at least not at that moment. But Feherty is so in love with TW, I'm sure he couldn't resist.

I agree with kickntrue - as long as this is the one and only time Stevie takes the mic and uses his golfer's victory to poke Tiger, I'm okay with it. If Adam Scott wins next week, or one year form now and someone pursues Stevie, just say you're happy for your guy and go clean the clubs.

Also agree needs to end here. I understand it makes for good TV and that caddies are people too (unlike gingers ROFL) but I think that is the first time I've seen a caddie interviewed without the player. Kinda made Adam's win a little less special in my book. At least interview him and show it after the commercials. Not a longer interview than Adam himself!

srogers13 says:
What, no comments about the crowd at the 18th hole chanting for Stevie as they were walking up the final fairway? How do we know that Adam Scott did not hear this and encouraged Williams to walk ahead? And my guess it was not Feherty's idea to interview Williams, he probably had someone in his ear telling him to ask questions, and when Williams got started, not like Feherty could exactly stop him, since it was making good TV.

SpaceMaNy0 says:
What I want to know is when they're going to stop showing Tiger's 4th from the fairway bunker on the par 5 17th when he's 15 SHOTS BEHIND and show the good golfers vying for the lead. Watching Sunday, all I could think was, "Gee I'm glad he's done so maybe now we can watch the people who have a chance to win." Alas, it was not to be. Highlights from his stellar even par final round and an interview with the 50th place finisher..... Golf on TV is a joke anymore.
