Fred Couples Selects Tiger for Presidents Cup
By mustang6560 on 8/25/11
President Cup Captain Fred Couples officially ended the "will he, won't he" drama and selected Tiger Woods for the Presidents Cup.
"I've told him that he's going to be on the team," Couples said just before a practice round preparing for the Boeing Classic at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge. "There is no reason for me to wait till Sept. 26 to pick Tiger. He's the best player in the world forever."
Tiger published a rare blog post earlier in the week letting the world know, and mainly Freddie, that he was interested in representing the USA at the biennial event in Australia despite his recent on course woes.

The Presidents Cup will be played November 14-20 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The event follows a similar format as the Ryder Cup, but if plays in opposite years and it features an American team against a team of non-European International players.

Impressed that you beat a lot of major news outlets to this story.

Guess that means no Frys.com or Disneyworld for Tiger. Not his style anyways. Very hard to imagine him or any other top tier player for that matter playing any of those b flight events.

I'm sorry, I really don't understand this decision. He's playing like crap. Why don't we throw John Daly on the team too. Any other once-were's we can think of.

dottomm says:
I agree with Envythepea. Freddie SHOULD add John Daly too!!!

@envy If you read Couples's comments about it you will see that this decision is in large part in recognition of Woods's accomplishments over the last dozen years. I dunno, maybe Freddie sees special something in this guy. Spectators are so quick to write off a player on account of a couple bad seasons but I think fellow players would have a much different perspective. Most players have had bad slumps in their career. Didn't Lee Westwood drop to like 300th in the world at one point? Now look at him.

Beef, I know what you're saying...it's Tiger Woods for goodness sake, and I know that he and Freddy are buddies, but there are guys who are playing well who should be a true captain's pick and have earned it. I sure hope he plays well for Freddy's sake.

@Envy At the end of the day, does it really matter? It's basically a made for tv exhibition that literally doesn't mean anything.

Terrible decision. It's not a lifetime achievement award. This is an insult to the players playing well right now. He had his time, he blew it, let some of these other guys who are busting their asses get some recognition.

If Tiger had any class, or wanted people to think he does (I would guess the latter based on his track record), he should turn it down for exactly the reasons I stated.

EloraBlue says:
As ToddRobb said, this is a TV decision for essentially a made for TV event. I imagine there was a lot of subtle and not so subtle pressure directed towards Couples over this decision. It don't matter either way.

ToddRobb says:
@Elora You know the deal, you can surely believe some tv executive or one of Freddie's sponsors got in his ear and pushed him in Tiger's direction. Just for the mere fact of Tiger being on the team the ratings will at the very least double what they would have been if Tiger was at home banging waitresses and strippers.

@Trip I think you need to get a hold of the fact that Tiger doesn't give a shit about anyone except Tiger, I honestly believe he couldn't care less what people think of him.
8/25/11

Trip says:
I agree with all of you guys. And Tiger not caring what people think of him is what makes him the greatest golfer, and an asshole.
8/25/11

ToddRobb says:
@Trip EXACTLY!!

ToddRobb says:
I think it's more of a surprise to find out that in order to be the greatest golfer in the world you have to be an asshole of great proportions. The arrogance that Tiger had/has has served him well in his past dominance of the sport. Even Jack was seen by many as an "asshole" back in the day, nowhere near the level of Tiger, but it was there. Even now Jack's got some what of a chip that resides on his shoulder. I've always said that I wished Phil had a little more "asshole" in him to maybe have more of a killer instinct.

Captains picks are for guys that don't make the team based on points, but can make an impact. Tiger is the leader for average points per President's Cup. That is the kind of guy that can make an impact... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_President

Werepuppie says:
It is all about the ratings for the sponsors. If Tiger does not play, the viewership is half of what it could be.The sponsors will be angry and maybe bail on future events.Couples did the right thing here, and he did it quick so as to calm the TV sponsors.

mjaber says:
As long as he paired with Steve Stricker, and only Steve Stricker, I guess it's OK. I think there are some other guys that he could have picked that could have used the experience as a prep for the Ryder Cup. As has been stated, the President's Cup is really just an exhibition, for now. Eventually, it might reach a competitive level somewhere near the Ryder Cup, but for now it's just a "fun" event. Sure, they all want to win, but it doesn't have the same killer atmosphere as the Ryder Cup.

Viewership, sponsor $$$, publicity. Nothing else need be said.

Anyone out there saying, "Tiger needs to decline the invite because it is a slight to the guys who have worked really hard this year to earn a spot on the team", are fools. You played hard but not hard enough, had you played hard enough you would be in one of those ten available spots. The captains pick isn't for number 11 and 12. Why even have a captains pick if thats the case. Let Freddie pick whoeer he wants. Who are we to say we know more about golf than boom boom?

Envythepea says:
I don't know about it not mattering. From what I recall of the last few President Cup competitions, they still want to beat the International team and it sucks to lose no matter the competition. Does any of it really matter?

mmontisano says:
don't tell Adam Scott or Ernie Els that this is just "exhibition." those guys want it...bad.
8/26/11

ToddRobb says:
Anyone with an ounce of competitiveness that tees it up wants to win, that's not the question, of course they want to win, but does it matter if they lose?? Not one bit. A few years ago the some of the American players were beefing about even playing because they weren't being paid. In 2003 Tiger and Ernie Els were in a tie after three playoff holes to determine who wins, it was getting dark so they just called a tie and shared the cup. Does any of it really matter? No.
