Fred Couples Responds To Trash Talk
By mustang6560 on 10/18/11
It didn't take U.S. Team captain Fred Couples long to respond to Greg Norman's Presidents Cup trash talking.
Over the weekend, the very opinionated International Team captain said that if he were in Freddie's shoes as U.S. Team captain, he would not have selected Tiger Woods as a captain's pick. Instead, he would have opted for PGA Champion Keegan Bradley.
Freddie offered this rebuttal.
"I have no problem with Greg. He can say whatever he wants, but I'm not really into that. I play golf with my clubs,'' Couples said.I don't want to read too much into the "trash talking" because at the end of the day, the captains are really just event promoters. Sure, they will help set line ups and offer words of encouragement before each round, but their main job is to attract interest to the event so having a little pre-tournament trash talking is to be expected.
But, the best line from Freddie's rebuttal is "I play golf with my clubs". Really? Me too! No way! I think he meant to say something like "I let my clubs do the talking" or "My clubs speak louder than my words". Either way, the "read between the lines" speak is clear, if it comes down to it, Freddie's not scared to settle the Presidents Cup "guy-to-guy" with the Shark, as gentlemen of course.

No need to drag Stuart Appleby into this, Nate.
But you make a good suggestion. I say if the points are tied at the end of sunday singles, the captains should engage each other in match play to break the tie.
change the headline from appleby to allenby...how dare you confuse the easily confusable names...
"I say if the points are tied at the end of Sunday singles, the captains should engage each other in match play to break the tie."
@beef: Great idea! Maybe a 5 hole mini-match. If that were the tir breaker, I know we would all be pulling for a tie at the end.
Stuart Allenby??? Ha nice correction, Nate
At least it doesn't say Stuart Allenby.
spoke too soon.
I'm starting to think Nate hasn't picked up on his typo... There are two guys: Stuart Appleby and Robert Allenby, This story is about Robert Allenby not Stuart Appleby or as the subtitle says; Stuart Allenby. But the rest of the article is great, and I agree a captain's play-off would be great and everyone would be hoping for a tie every other year.
That's our boy alright.
Isn't the purpose of a "captain's pick" to step out of the tournament winners, points leaders, $ list or playoff winners? Probably most about viewership and sponsors ($$$). Soon it will be a "Big Break" winner!
