Obama Will Not Attend Presidents Cup
By mustang6560 on 11/14/11
Should President Barack Obama make an appearance at the Presidents Cup?
BARACK Obama and Julia Gillard will both miss the prestige Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club next week.

Tournament organisers are said to be disappointed neither leader is able to get out of the political bunker to attend.

Mr Obama, who is a keen golfer, will be in Australia next week but his schedule is too tight.
Personally, I am hoping Obama changes his itinerary in order to make an appearance at the Presidents Cup. The biennial event is one of golf's signature international events so an appearance from the President of the United States (and Prime Minister of Australia for that matter) would add to the grandeur of the event, especially since he's already in the country on official business. I know Australia is a big place, but I think he can justify the added fuel expense to fly from Canberra to Melbourne for an evening or what have you.

Unfortunately, I am afraid he doesn't want to give conservative pundits any additional talking points about his trip Down Under, which is a shame. His opponents already love to give him a hard time about playing golf so I'm sure they would jump all over him for attending the Presidents Cup (Al Gore just took a shot at him last week for playing golf).

What is the harm to stop over at Melbourne for an hour or 2? weak. He should go.

"His opponents already love to give me a hard time about playing golf" I didn't know you had politcal pundits complaing about how much you golf...

Sure, why not? While he's there he can just take the prize money from the top 5 golfers and split it with the bottom 5 golfers- just because they were disadvantaged by lessons taken, equipment, country of origin, sponsors, and color pants they were wearing.

When I read the title of the article, I didn't think he should make a special trip. Since he's in the country. Why not?

He's already going to be there... Canberra and Melbourne are less than 300 miles apart... He should definitely do a pop-in.

It sounds easy, but any POTUS visit is a logistical nightmare. Secret Service has to secure the location weeks ahead...and a golf course is tough to secure.

It's about the golf not politics or grandstanding. I really don't care what sporting events the POTUS attends. It doesn't lend or take away the grandeur of the event (for me).
