Jiyai Shin wins Ricoh Women's British Open

Jiyai Shin won her second career major championship Sunday at the Ricoh Women's British Open, which is her second victory in as many weeks.
Jiyai Shin avoided mistakes in miserable weather conditions Sunday to cruise to a record nine-stroke victory in the Women's British Open.

In the 36-hole finish Sunday in the wind-delayed tournament, Shin took a three-shot lead into the final round after shooting a 1-under 71 in the morning. She stayed calm while strong wind and heavy showers sent scores soaring at Royal Liverpool in the afternoon, closing with a 73 to finish at 9-under 279.

"It was a long, very, very tough day out there," Shin said. "But I kept my focus and concentrated on every shot, and when I made the winning putt, it was great.
With her victory Sunday, Jiyai helped set a record for professional women's golf. For the first time in history, Asian women have won all four major championships in one season (seventh in a row). The last non-Asian to win a major was Stacy Lewis at the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship. It's a first but it's hardly a surprise as eight of the top 10 female golfers in the Rolex Ranking are Asian.

If I had to guess, I'd say nine Jiyai's lucky number.

Well, let's consider her performance over the previous fortnight. Last week at the Kingsmill Championship, Jiyai defeated Paula Creamer on the ninth playoff hole at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort. This week at Royal Liverpool, the South Korean defeated fellow countrywoman Inbee Park by nine strokes. And both accomplishments occurred in the ninth month of the calendar year. If nine isn't her lucky number already, it should be.

I was never able to make time to watch any of the play. Based on the scores, the weather was a huge factor. Good for Jiyai Shin. It takes a strong will to play through miserable weather. Very easy to give in to negative thoughts.

I saw some of the rain-splattered highlights on TGC; it looked absolutely miserable. Perhaps we should say that Jiyai Shin *survived* the Women's British Open, instead?

I would say she killed it. the next person 9 shots back survived to second place.
