IOC To Announce Design Team Tomorrow
By mustang6560 on 3/6/12
The International Olympic Committee will end months of speculation tomorrow when it announces who will design the golf course for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
IOC officials began a three-day trip to Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday to discuss the city’s preparations for the 2016 Olympics, and organizers will announce the designer of the golf course for the games. The eight remaining firms include Gary Player Design, Greg Norman Golf Course Design (with Lorena Ochoa), Hanse Golf Design, Hawtree Ltd., Nicklaus Design (with Annika Sorenstam), Renaissance Golf, Robert Trent Jones II and Thomson-Perret Golf Course Architects.
Golf will return to the Olympics in 2016 for the first time since 1904, so whoever wins will be under a lot of pressure to design one heck of a course! I'll be sure to let you know who wins as soon as I find out tomorrow.

My thought is that Gary Player gets it. Just gut feeling.
My first thought was "Big Whoop"
Hanse Design Group was selected by the IOC. I have to admit I never heard of them. They are located in Pennsylvania.
Why do they need to design a new golf course? Doesn't Rio already have a decent-enough track somewhere? I have no idea how long it takes to go from drawing board to opening day for a course, but 4 years doesn't seem like a heckuva lot of time. And don't you want at least a year for stuff to grow in?

read an article bout it. they don't have an Olympic quality course avail near the city proper. they have a swampy tract of land picked out that they need to figure out proper drainage for, etc. next to the city. should be quite a project. major score for Hanse Design, whoever they are
Duke of Hazards says:
looked at their (Hanse's) website, looks like they designed a track called Inniscrone in PA that birdieX has played a few times. they also designed a well-regarded public course called Rustic Canyon out here in So Cal, kind of an isolated, links style course nestled up in the hills bout an hour northwest of L.A.
