If you need a reason to watch the Reno-Tahoe Open at Montreux Golf & Country Club, then I've got your reason.
Unlike the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, which is the main event this weekend at Firestone Country Club, and the other PGA Tour events that use the traditional stroke play format, the Reno-Tahoe Open will be using the modified Stableford system to decide the winner. The International (1986-2006) was the last Tour event to use the points system. It is in effect this week at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nev., to give the tournament character as it is an opposite-field event, contested alongside the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. The modified Stableford system, like the normal Stableford system, awards points based on a player's score on each hole. However, unlike the normal Stableford system, the modified Stableford system deducts points for bogeys and double bogeys (or worse). At the end of the tournament, the player with the most points wins. Here is a breakdown of how the point system works.

Modified Stableford would probably be the only way I could get a negative score... 7/31/12
When I've played this format you are given a quota based on your handicap (36 - hcp) is the score you need to shoot. So if 16 hcp your quota is 20 and you shoot 22 points you are +2. I'm playing in a two day Modified Stableford tourney this weekend actually. 7/31/12
The points awarded AE different in the handicapped events though- bogey 1 pt, par 2 pt, birdie 3, etc 7/31/12
cool. makes me want to tune in to check it out. they should do some bingo/bango/bongo at the next red-headed stepchild event opposite a wgc/major 7/31/12
Dusty23 says:
Ran a league for twelve years that used a different version of the Modified Stableford, due to the wide variety of skill of the players and to keep the math easier, you made points for double bogey or better, 1pt for a double, 2 for an bogey, 3 for par, 4 for birdie, 5 for eagle, 6 for dbl eagle, 10 for hole in one. We used Handicaps for all and points were awarded on the net hole scores. In all that time only, only one person ever got 10 pts. 7/31/12
