"There's no evidence cannabis is ever performance enhancing in sport"

In light of Nick Delpopolo's expulsion from the London Games for accidentally eating a weed brownie, some wondered why marijuana is still on the World Anti Doping Agency's banned list because there is no evidence that pot boosts athletic performance.
Well, it turns out golf maybe to blame.
While it is generally accepted that cannabis is unlikely to give athletes any advantage in fast-paced sports, some experts say it could prove helpful in sports like shooting or golf where a steady hand is needed.David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, disagrees.
"There's no evidence cannabis is ever performance enhancing in sport, and since its use is legal in a number of countries, there's no reason for it to be banned by WADA," said David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London.Mr. Nutt has a fair point. If it's legal across the English Channel, then why is it on WADA's banned list?
In the U.S., the growing majority of the populace is starting to change its long-held opinion that pot is bad. However, the population of people who view marijuana as an illicit drug is still large enough that I don't foresee any changes to WADA's banned list anytime soon. Plus, if a golfer does think pot relaxes his nerves and chooses to smoke it to help him relax, is s/he gaining a competitive advantage?

yea pot gives you a competitive edge in sports... if you're sport is COMPETITIVE EATING!!! amirite?? *high five* .... anybody?
I agree with Mr. Nutt. If there is any advantage it is negligible, and no greater than that of caffeine. People don't realize how misguided it is to outlaw a simple plant and they just assume that since it is illegal it must be bad. Well in the 21st century, the information age, it is important to think for ourselves people. Go read up on the history of cannabis prohibition.
I think it's on the list for a very good reason. It's not going to help you, but there's a damn good chance it's going to hurt you. Think about boxing, wrestling, any sport where speed and a vehicle (bicycles, skates, etc) is involved. It's the loss of focus, and the relaxation that makes it dangerous in those sports, for the competitor and/or for others competing along side them. Do you want to be the guy passing a stoned guy on a bicycle going over 50mph down hill?

lol @ Xris. here's your high five and a pint of Ben & Jerry's. you wearing a tie-dye under your bowtie and corduroy blazer?

MJaber is spot-on. I sure as %$#& would not want a stoned air-traffic controller guiding my flight into an airport, cooking my restaurant meal, analyzing my blood-work, or telling me to fly a 2-iron over that water hazard.
No matter what they try to do, it simply will not end well. I avoid those people like the plague whenever possible.
Sorry to burst your bubble Torleif, but I'm guessing at least 75% of the time whoever cooked your restaurant meal was baked.
+1 to Fiorello La Guardia
I'll have to agree with SpaceMaNy0.
People like Torleif and Mjaber have never been stoned in their lives and just assume that all the negative things they have heard are true about pot. Its no where near as bad as being drunk. You are still able to function in a normal manner.
@Nitekst... you're half right. I've never been stoned, but I've been around it and people who have been and while their impairment may not be as bad as being drunk, they were still impaired, and I would not have gotten into a vehicle with them behind the wheel, or allowed them to drive themselves. I've also had friends who had to be rushed to the ER because the stuff they got was laced with something and they ended up on the floor in the bathroom, unconcious.
Functioning in a "normal" manner and being able to maintain the necessary focus to control a vehicle at a high rate of speed, or protect yourself in a pugilistic sport are two very different things. I really could care less if it's legal or not for the average everyday person. It does have some very real health benefits for improving the comfort of people with debilitating conditions, and if it works, I think it should be OK to use. However, there need to be controls on when it's OK, and when it isn't, just like alcohol or any other controlled substance.
I say here's the other thing though ---- people are looking at this like it has the same properties in the body as alcohol. it doesn't.... Alcohol, you drink, your body metabolizes it and it's gone in a relatively quick amount of time. Pot, you ingest, smoke, etc and it STAYS in your body for quite a bit longer. I've seen tests positive over 5 sometimes 6 weeks in more than trace amounts. If someone wants to travel to Amsterdam and smoke a little where its legal then they come back and try to get a job where they're drug testing or in this case - be an olympian - it will show up on tests longer than the effects last. That's my main problem with it. To my knowledge, there is no test that can tell you about when they ingested it.

BX: That's an excellent reason to not touch the stuff in the first place.
NitekastGuitar: You're correct; I've never touched the stuff and have never been stoned or drunk in my entire life. The outcome: No guilt and no regrets. BTW, what kind of axe(s) do you play?
Came here to say Smoking weed sure hasn't helped my game. Not yesterday. Not today...Maybe next time. We'll see.
Torleif, my main guitar is a Fender Jagstang but any Fender will do.
Unscientific, I know, but the dopers I've seen have been losers with little ambition. I certainly wouldn't trust any of them with any important task.
legal or not and what it does to your body does not matter...ITS THE GOVMENT AND ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY...I heard "Fluffy" say at the BMW..."oh boy thank God those are the bomb dogs and not the dope dogs goig near the caddy shack"...gimme a weedhead over a drunk any day....ROLL UP!!! AND TEE OFF...LOL

They say that pot makes you mellow. I have seen some guys that are so mellow they are limp. I doubt that any thing will improve your ability to sink a putt so who cares who is using. What ever will be, will be.
