Eyes on the prize, guys...
Ticket to Ryde-r?
By Torleif Sorenson on 8/28/12
Several PGA Tour players turned in eyebrow-raising results on Sunday at The Barclays at Bethpage Black - specifically, those hoping to be selected by United States Ryder Cup team captain Davis Love III next week. "DL3" has four captain's selections to make to round out the U.S. team that will face the European Ryder Cup team later this month outside Chicago.

In theory, Brandt Snedeker and Dustin Johnson may have played their way onto the team this past weekend; when the final point standings for the American side became official after the PGA Tour's Greensboro stop, Snedeker and Johnson were ranked 13th and 15th, respectively. Snedeker finished alone in 2nd at Bethpage, while Johnson tied for 3rd, just one shot behind.

On the European team side, the biggest chatter surrounds Ireland's Pádraig Harrington and whether or not his T-19 at Bethpage is enough to get him selected by Euro captain José María Olazábal. But he must choose two players, not one.

We want you to go "out on a limb" for both sides:
  • Which four players should U.S. captain Davis Love III select?

  • Which two players should European captain José María Olazábal choose?
The oober(s) who accurately predicts DL3's selections will be acknowledged in a separate post, trumpeting their awesomeness.

The choices are tough... I'm feeling a little verklempt... ...tawk amongst yahselves!

(NOTE: Your humble editor was otherwise-occupied with other writing duties Monday and missed Ollie's choices of Ian Poulter and Nicolas Colsaerts.)

Am I missing something? José María Olazábal has picked his team, he did it on Monday if I am correct. So only the USA team to go out on a limb with right!

As Captain, one would hope that DL3 sticks with the point totals except in a situation where the 11th or 12th ranked player is hurt or has had an absolutely terrible late season. I would call Stricker and Furyk locks. Mahan has won twice in 2012 and has more overall points than either Snedeker or Johnson. While his play lately is not good, I think he earns a pick. That leaves Fowler. One win in his career. Not playing really well. Maybe he gets bumped.

In the long run, who cares. The US team will be good as will the European. It will be a great show.

Many have suggested that Love will set Medina up to favor the bombers. That may be a mistake.I played quite a few matches at #3 when I was young and pretty long off the tee. Medina has a number of long dog leg par 4s and I found myself hitting through the dog legs the first few times I played the course. I finally started to hit my 3 wood to stay in the fairway. The roughs can be brutal.Especially in Chicago in September. The ability to hook and fade the ball at will may enter into which players he chooses. Todays players don't shape their shots as much because of the ball used today. Not everyone can do what Bubba does with his driver. A Snedeker or a Mahan type that can hit the ball straight may be more valuable in a match play event.
