Jack Nicklaus: "I would love to, but I simply can't."

Fred Couples asked Jack Nicklaus to help him lead the United States to victory in the 2013 Presidents Cup next fall at Muirfield Village. But, using the "It's not you, it's me" line, Jack respectfully declined.
"Freddie paid me a nice compliment by his suggestion," Nicklaus said Tuesday. "It was very thoughtful of him. I would love to, but I simply can't. I have duties as host, so that would not be the right thing to do."It would have been the perfect vice-captain pick. Not only is Jack an 18-time major champion, he's an experienced Presidents Cup captain (he's 2-1-1 in his four appearances). Plus, he friggin' designed Muirfield! Can you imagine the kind of local knowledge he would have been able to provide to the Americans? The U.S. team may have posted the first shutout in biennial international competition!
Alas, Freddie announced that he picked Jay Haas as one of his vice-captains (we'll have to wait to find out about the other two). International captain Nick Price named Shigeki Maruyama, Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone as his three vice-captains. You can read more about them on the the Presidents Cup website.
