Butch Harmon: "I haven't been with him for 10 years"
By mustang6560 on 2/27/13
Butch Harmon used to coach Tiger Woods — the key word is used to. The pair were successful together, however, they parted ways nearly 10 years ago.

Since then, Butch has bred one of the best, if not the best, stables in golf. His star pupils include the likes of Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Adam Scott to name a few. So, Butch was offended by the media who referred to him as "Tiger Woods' ex-coach" during his recent trip to south Florida to help the POTUS with his golf swing.
"I haven't been with him for 10 years. It's irritating to be honest," Harmon said. "I guess they were looking for a connection because the president was playing with Tiger. But people think Tiger made me successful. No one remembers I took Greg to No. 1 in the world, or all the work with Elkington, or Davis Love III. It's the press. Anything to sensationalize. And you're dealing with a White House press that doesn't know any of these names."
When I first read Butch's comments I immediately thought of Leslie Nielson's "surely" exchange in the movie Airplane!.
Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it?

Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.

Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.
But, seriously, Butch shouldn't let the media referring to him as "Tiger's ex-coach" bother him. Steve Elkington and Davis Love III are talented golfers, but Tiger put the name Butch Harmon on the map. And he should be grateful for that, not resentful.

Swing coaches and caddies should not be public figures. I put them in the same category as NFL referees. I blame Steve Williams, Hank Haney and Ed Hochuli for the "behind the scenes" guys being thrust into the spotlight.

However, I get the impression Butch LOVES the limelight! He complains however he thrives on the attention!

Any publicity is good publicity....

I remember when we had to know the hand signals because NFL refs didn't have microphones.... Those were the days.

It sounds like his beef is with the press. And why not? They can be very very irritating.

Everyone is getting in on the act of using movie quotes. The other day I heard an airliner asking the controller for a lower altitude. The controler said
"Negative, GhostRider, the pattern is full".(Top Gun,just before the F14 made the low pass). I'm guessing it was an inside joke and he knew the pilot.
