Spieth and the 2012
NCAA championship team
Speaking of Spieth
By Torleif Sorenson on 3/19/13
While Kevin Streelman, Stacy Lewis, and (insert-a-hip-portmanteau-for-Tiger-and-Lindsey-here) were dominating the golf headlines Monday morning, a north Texas native's latest accomplishment seems to have flown under the radar a bit. But as with pretty much everything else in Jordan Spieth's golf career, it was not a fluke.

He's only 19 years old, but already has an impressive résumé:
  • The only golfer other than Tiger Woods to have won the boys' U.S. Junior Amateur more than once (2009 at Trump National-Bedminster and 2011 at Gold Mountain);

  • Runner-up, 2009 Junior PGA Championship at TPC Rivers Bend;

  • As a high school junior, became the sixth-youngest golfer to make the cut at a PGA Tour event (2010 Byron Nelson)

  • 2009, 2010, 2011 Texas UIL Class 5A High School state champion;

  • Member of the 2011 U.S. Walker Cup team (2-0-1);

  • Member of the University of Texas Longhorns 2012 NCAA Division I national championship team;

  • Low amateur at the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic;

  • Finished T-7 at the Web.com Tour's Panama Claro Championship in February, in an attempt to secure playing privileges on the AAA circuit;

  • Playing on a sponsor's exemption, finished T-2 at the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, which got him into the field in Tampa this past week.
In a Sunday interview, Spieth reflected on the doors now opening for him:
"Yeah, four weeks ago, fortunate to get an exemption, great guys that run the tournament down in Panama. Fortunate to get an exemption to start playing somewhere, and no status anywhere. Now it's a great feeling to know that I'm at least a temporary member of the TOUR right now."
By virtue of finishing T-7 at the PGA Tour's Tampa Bay Championship at Innisbrook, Spieth has secured special temporary membership on the PGA Tour, having earned $521,893 in 2013. As the AP's Doug Ferguson reports, Spieth is roughly $150,000 shy of securing his Tour card for 2014.

Spieth will not only secure his PGA Tour card for 2014, but will come within an eyelash of winning a 2013 PGA Tour event.
