Intrigue at Mission Hills
By Torleif Sorenson on 4/4/13
You've got to hand it to the marketing specialists of the Kraft Nabisco Championship: "Masters of their Kraft" is not only a reference to the title sponsor of the LPGA's first major of the season, but it's also a clever reference to the other "first major of the season." Golf Channel is televising the Kraft Nabisco Championship (still affectionaly referred to by some fans as "The Dinah") today through Sunday. Some interesting sub-plots have emerged:

"Wie-sponding" to pressure:
Earlier today, we told you about Annika Sorenstam's sobering analysis of Michelle Wie's stalled career; Wie hasn't won or made many waves since her last victory at the 2010 Canadian Women's Open in Winnipeg. This afternoon, Wie finished at even par, four shots adrift of South Korea's Na Yeon Choi and Norway's Suzann Pettersen. At least she hasn't put herself in danger of missing the cut, as she did last year.

Natalie Gulbis returns:
As reported by the AP's John Nicholson, Natalie Gulbis is returning from a mosquito-borne bout with malaria, which she contracted during the LPGA's event in Thailand.
"It's been a pretty rough month. I've been trying to play, and then I'll fall back and rest for a couple of days, and then I try to play again, and I'm back to square one. Hopefully, I'm past that part and I'm doing better every day.

"I'm just so excited to be back. Not only to be back here in this event, but back playing golf. I mean, [Tuesday] was the first time I've played 18 holes since Singapore, and I really missed being on the golf course."
The three-time Solheim Cup participant (5-4-14) has one LPGA victory to her credit, the 2007 Evian Masters.

Stacy's back:
The world number-one among women, Stacy Lewis won this championship in 2011 and has won six times since then — including twice this year. Unlike Michelle Wie's splashy arrival on the golf scene, Lewis battled through back injuries and growing up with scoliosis to unquestionably prove her worth as a professional. Lewis knows how to persevere and win, but in the last year, she has also had to learn how to handle the spotlight:
"I guess I'm just more comfortable with who I am and more comfortable being in front of people. I mean, certainly I think the kid that went to college and didn't speak unless spoken to would not be up on this stage right now. It's something I've had to learn how to do, just when you play good golf."
To bet against Lewis winning her second major and ninth LPGA title this week would be as foolish as Lady Gaga walking into a dog pound wearing her meat dress.

Kurt the Knife says:
pasteurized processed cheese product.
They can't even legally call it cheese.
Torleif Sorenson says:
KtK: Is that a backhand at the sponsor, or the event?
falcon50driver says:
Depends on which cheese you're looking at.
