Masters Round 2 Comment Thread
By mustang6560 on 4/12/13
Like yesterday, we built a page dedicated to your thoughts and opinions of the second round of The Masters. We want to anything and everything you have to say about Augusta National and the first major championship of the year.

A quick fantasy update — 'clevelandstever 1' and 'Tripoli7' lead the oobgolf Best Ball Majors Challenge group at 13-under-par after par. There are four people on their heels at -12 so it's anyone's tournament. Can either gentleman maintain their leads through the second round?

If for whatever reason you missed coverage of the first round, Tor wrote a good piece highlighting day one at The Masters.

Before the rounds even get too far going, I just hope that this Master's is not decided by weather. Conditions were soft yesterday, and could be soft this morning, turning firm by day's end. I would not be surprised if the majority of the leaderboard is guys who got to play late Thu/early Fri but I hope it's better balanced than that. I know the committee has typically set some very hard pins on Friday to set up for a great weekend.

Early on round 2 scores are looking high. Looks to be an interesting day.

LB: Which is a little surprising. All the pundits last night were saying scores were going to be low, real low in the morning.

Heard that the wind is blowing in a bad direction in the morning. It is supposed to calm down and come out of the west (better direction for the back 9) in the early afternoon.

Everything I heard this morning was saying because of this the scoring will be done by the afternoon group (kind of like yesterday).

Rory is flirting with the cutline. He's +2 thru 4 holes.

mjaber says:
@mustang... so is the Big Easy

legitimatebeef says:
Doubtful--at this rate and with the new cutline policies it looks like only about 20 players are going to miss the cut. The only real notable cutline casualties at this point are Mahan and Louis O. They should feel awful about themselves.

jasonfish11 says:
LOL Beef "They should feel awful about themselves."

You are my daily ray of sunshine.

mjaber says:
@Beef... you forget about 3-time Major Champ Padraig Harrington at +6?

legitimatebeef says:
Ok sorry I know its all been laid out in advance, this is how it always is (I think), and the limited coverage is what makes this tournament special (eye-roll) but I gotta say it again, the coverage is really sucking this year the way its turning out. I mean, I guess its good that the Couples/Johnston group is being covered but other than that it's lame. Guan has played his way into the cutline, we are all fascinated as to how he is doing it but all we have is second-hand descriptions of what's going on. Plus I feel like four holes of Tiger's have been aired so far. Now I think I know how golf fans in the dark ages must have felt.

In this case, I think Beef has a legitimate beef. If any of you are wondering what "Masters On The Range" on CBS Sports Network is like, you're missing nothing at all. IMHO, the administration and members of ANGC really need to permit CBS / ESPN to go to air a lot sooner than 3:00 p.m. ET. I remember NBC's coverage of the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble was basically on all-day - on over-the-air TV, no less.

BTW, Beef, you *do* understand, don't you, that we appreciate how you can find the cloud in every silver lining, right? :D

I'm as positive as anyone. It's just that the negative comments are more noticeable I think.

Sparker1969 says:
At this moment, with five tied at -4 only 15 players would miss the cut.

Torleif Sorenson says:
Tianlang Guan was assessed a one-stroke penalty at 17 for slow play!
4/12/13

legitimatebeef says:
Wow Tor, did you read that over the Telex feed or something?
4/12/13

mjaber says:
I find it interesting that the coverage is better on masters.com and their app than it is on TV. I've been switching between feeds on my phone most of the day. Yesterday, I had it streaming at home on my bedroom PC, with picture-in-picture.
4/12/13

mustang6560 says:
I admit it's a bit of a conspiracy theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if Augusta National penalized Tianlang in a effort to keep him from making the cut.
4/12/13

Torleif Sorenson says:
It was confirmed by Golf Channel reporter Randall Mell. Nathan and I were discussing this just moments ago; he feels that Guan can still make the cut, depending in part on what Tiger does this afternoon. Credit to the kid; he still made par at 18.

Kurt the Knife says:
penalized Guan for slow play?!!!
In his first PGA event?!!!
And yet they let Jason day slug-slime his way around the tour for years?!!
4/12/13

Sparker1969 says:
Angel Cabrera is in contention, everyone else can go home he's a lock to win.
4/12/13

legitimatebeef says:
Nathan, are you implying that Augusta National is racist? If so, I can get on board with that.

Meanwhile, nice par save by the player known to Nathan as "Lindsey Vonn's boyfriend" to kick off ESPN live coverage.

Duke of Hazards says:
all hell will break loose if he missed the cut due to that penalty. 28 years since they assessed a slow play penalty and they pick on the 14yo chinese kid that actually has a shot at making the cut and making history? it's not like he was a bajillion over par like the other ams and had no chance. maybe nathan's right
4/12/13

Torleif Sorenson says:
Jim Nantz reported just seconds ago that the last player penalized for slow play during a major was Steve Lowery at the 2004 PGA at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
4/12/13

legitimatebeef says:
Ok I did some snooping around on masters.com. The course is playing tough...except for the par 5s. It's a par 5 contest at this point. 14 and 16 are birdie holes today as well.
4/12/13

srogers13 says:
The person who assessed the penalty to Guan was an European Tour Rules official. So I don't think it was quote unquote a Masters decision. Blame the Euro Tour because they are tired of seeing the Blokes choke in the majors.

jasonfish11 says:
I dont mind that anyone is starting to get slow play penalties (they are needed). But start doing it in smaller events. Then work your way up to penalizing people in the majors.

This kid wasn't even born the last time someone got a slow play penalty in a regular PGA Tour event (1995). What a load of crap.

mustang6560 says:
LB: Lindsey Vonn's "lover". Get it right!

mjaber says:
He's back inside the cutline... at least for the moment.

Duke of Hazards says:
oof Dustin Johnson, rough finish

jfurr says:
@DoH - yeah, good grief. he was T1 when I looked at leaderboard at lunch, then next time I looked he was back 21st or so. I finally got the chance to see the video, for some reason he laid up on #15, then hit a weak looking pitch short and wet. Dropped and didn't get up and down. Then on #18 put one in the greenside bunker and the shot out hit the lip and bounced back into the bunker, and again didn't get up and down. disappointing....

legitimatebeef says:
Dramatic, felt like a weekend round.

jfurr says:
I only got to see the last bit of live video (17 and 18 with Day, Fowler and Harrington). The camera work looks really great on the masters website.

legitimatebeef says:
I think oober Sparker1969 makes a good point, Angel Cabrera is a credible threat. Watch out!

...the Murseless says:
Tiger not DQ'd for signing an incorrect score card... Augusta using the new TV rule as a get out of jail free card for itself and CBS.

This won't end well...

The bickering about it will be fun to watch.
