Miller Barber (1931-2013)
By Torleif Sorenson on 6/13/13
Former PGA Tour and Champions Tour player Miller Barber passed away on Tuesday, aged 82. One of the words to best describe "Mr. X" is "consistent" — not only did each of his 11 wins on the PGA Tour come in different years, but he won at least one Champions Tour event in nine straight years, from 1981-89. His closest encounter with a major championship was at the 1969 U.S. Open at Champions Golf Club, outside Houston, when he finished three shots behind another U.S. military veteran — Orville Moody.
And yet, the word that prominent people use most often to describe the man is... "gentleman."
Barber is survived by his wife, Karen, and five children -- Casey, Doug, Brad, Larry and Richard. May this gentleman and his flying right elbow rest in peace.

I met Miller Barber in an hotel elevator at Butler National. He had just completed his first round in the Western Open on what was a very difficult golf course and said he was mentally exhausted because the course was so tough. He had no complaints beyond the course was too much for him. The next day he shot a 67. A very humble man.
