9-Year-Old Shoots 58
By mustang6560 on 6/18/13
I am thoroughly disgusted impressed with Zach Adams, the 9-year-old who bested the likes of Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval by shooting a 58 in competition.
Competing in the Mount Pleasant Junior Golf Open this week at Patriots Point Links, Zach Adams shot an 18-hole score of 58.

Sure, the golf course he played totaled only 2,680 yards, but 58 is 58. And he did it in the heat of competition, shooting a pair of 29s over two days to win the 8-9 Boys division.

During the first round, Adams made an eagle and five birdies. He added two eagles and three birdies on the second day. The par-4 holes ranged from 150 to 170 yards, the par-5s were 200 to 215 yards and the par-3s were 60 to 75 yards.
On a separate but related note, I am tempted, for fun, to play from the red tees at Colonial (my home course) one day to see if I can break par. I highly doubt I could break 60, but I bet I could break 70.

@beef - oddly enough, don't take that bet, Beef. He has a way of getting suckers to bet, then magically hitting his goal the very next time he goes out after making the wager. (not bitter at all :)

This pisses me off.

I dont think I could shoot 58 and all of those yardages are par 3's for me.

Lets assume I hit 11 greens in 1 shot. I average about 7 now but I hit my irons pretty well (normally I dont miss greens from the fairway). So we'll give me 1.5x as many greens in 1 shot as my GIR stat, since I now dont have to put multiple good shots together to hit a green. Assume 1 chip on those 7 holes I miss.

I average 2.22 putts per GIR and 1.95 putts per round (So that means I average 1.77 puts when I miss the green).
So I'd have 24 putts on the 11 holes I hit in regulation and 12 putts on the ones I missed.

Congrats I shot 61 and have nothing more than a 3h for any shot.

Hey, if a measly five bucks is all it takes to spur a young Nathan towards greater golf then so be it.

I think a reverse mohawk would be better than $5...

Careful everyone, Mustang has already posted a 69, though not at Colonial.

On the other hand, we have a 5,000 yard, par 67 course where I have never even sniffed at a 70, much less broken into the 60's. So if this is a one-time challenge, I will put my money on the beef's side of the table. Mustang, the wager is now $10.

I'll throw a good cigar in that prize ring. Collectable at the World Am of course - wouldn't wanna ruin it by sending it through the postal service.

on Beef's side of the table. Bring a little literal sense to "close but no cigar" ;)

Impressed however I would say that young man needs to be challenged a little bit more. That course obviously was a bit easy for him. It's a great idea to play every now and then on a shorter course to get yourself used to scoring. Many people think too much about score rather than playing it shot by shot. The first time I shot 64 on my home course, I didn't even realize it until the 18th hole that I had a 3 footer for birdie and 64! Was one of the toughest 3 footers I ever had!

So we're *definitely* going to setup a challenge for July. I'm in wedding mode (get hitched Friday) so we'll have to iron out the details of the challenge after I get back from the honeymoon next month. But, beef, birdie, and whoever else, I accept!

Can we get a Fore Play post with details when you're back to work (congrats by the way!)?

I think I could do this. I've broken 30 on a par 28 course before. It might take a few tries to do it for two rounds in a row. But I'm also not nine.

That's because you don't have my former mother-in-law for a mother-in-law.

Beef: Thanks for taking the bet. We'll make sure that Nathan has a witness when he breaks 70... and chips in from off the green three times in one round - like he did last September.

Torleif, I'm thinking the Fore Play post should be a running diary for his round, play by play.

Is it weird that this excites me?
