Lexi Aces, Recari Wins
By Torleif Sorenson on 7/22/13
Two notable items emerged on Sunday from the LPGA's Marathon Classic (f.k.a. "The Jamie Farr") at Highland Meadows GC in Sylvania, Ohio:
The Iron Lady wins againBeatriz Recari captured her third LPGA Tour victory at the Marathon Classic on Sunday. For having shot 69-65-67-66 = 267 (-17), she deserves more than just the $195,000 in the winner's check, but that's the state of the LPGA Tour at the moment.
Recari is an interesting young woman — she only took up golf at age 11, but won the 2004 Spanish Amateur Championship and the 2005 French Amateur Championship, and played in the 2005 PING Junior Solheim Cup at the Bridgewater Club outside Indianapolis. While a student at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain, Recari qualified for the Ladies European Tour in November of 2005, then left school to play the LET full-time in 2006.
She won her first professional tournament in 2009 at the Finnair Masters, then joined the LPGA Tour for the 2010 season. That autumn, she was facing a return to Q-School due to a less-than-successful season, but then she won the LPGA's Sacramento-area event in October. It was shortly thereafter that Recari went public with her eating disorder, after which she became an official ambassador for the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness.
Believe it or not, Recari entered all 27 official LPGA tournaments in 2012 — and made the cut at every one of them. Now, she's a winner for the second time this year, has made 13 out of 14 cuts, and she's exempt from Q-School for a good, long time.
Ace, ace, babeee... (duh-duh-duh da-da-da duh...)Lexi Thompson had the shot of the tournament. Sadly, Golf Channel have failed to provide embed capability, but you can view the ace here.
She may not have won the tournament, but she shot 66-71-67-67 (-13) to tie for third, earned $77,618, and won a new car in the bargain. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon in Ohio.
