USGA Inks $1.2 Billion Broadcast Deal with FOX
By mustang6560 on 8/8/13

As oober mjaber mentioned in the forums, on the eve of the PGA Championship, the USGA announced its new lucrative broadcast partnership with FOX.
In a surprising announcement Wednesday night, the U.S. Golf Association said it has signed a 12-year multimedia deal with Fox network and Fox Sports 1 to be the domestic broadcast partner for the U.S. Open and other USGA championships.

Though financial terms weren't disclosed, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said the Fox bid was in the neighborhood of $100 million a year, more than double the previous contract. The person wasn't authorized to release details and spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to etiquette, the USGA, the R&A, and the Masters Tournament are not supposed to make any announcements during the week of the PGA Championship, which is hosted by the PGA Championship. The fact the USGA decided to break etiquette leads me to believe Glen Nager was sending Ted Bishop a subtle message -- related to the fact the PGA of America was very outspoken about the ban on anchored putting.

I agree with Rich Lerner, who last night on Live From The PGA Championship said the USGA should be embarrassed for its faux pas.

Torleif Sorenson says:
In his book Open, the author John Feinstein recounted the story of how NBC came to acquire the USGA rights during the mid 1990s. At the time, NBC offered $13 million, which was more than ABC/ESPN offered. Also, NBC was saying they would televise the U.S. Amateur semi-finals and final on the network, which ABC usually farmed out to ESPN.

With former NBC exec David Neal setting up Fox and FS1's coverage, I'm sure he'll make sure to do at least as good as job as Tommy Roy has done for NBC all this time. And at least NBC still has the Ryder Cup...

for now...

Does this mean less saturday/sunday golf coverage on NBC? I only have one channel, NBC, for the reason that I could save $90 a month and still be able to watch most golf tournaments on the weekends. Say it aint so!!

I wonder what kind of "innovative" tech Fox will bring to golf coverage. They gave us the 1st down line in football, the glowing puck in hockey, the strike zone in baseball... What will they do to enhance the viewing of a golf tournament?

gideon it will only be USGA tournaments on fox (as of now). I think the PGA tour will still be on NBC, but you'll need to go to your local bar to watch the US Open if you dont have fox.

I am more concerned about who the announcers will be.Without mentioning names there are some that I will be glad to dump but others that I would hate to lose.

True, Joe, but I'll bet that most people will NOT miss Chris Berman trying to talk about golf on ESPN. We already know that some others won't miss Andy North, either...

As long as it's not Joe Buck, I'm good.

Maybe they'll get Rocco Mediate to take the on-course/group follow role.

The coverage of the PGA shows the stark difference between the Masters, U S Open and British Open. Not so much in the on course coverage which is fine in most cases but in the commentators that do the lead up and closing shows. The PGA seems to offer subjects and commentators that are less stodgy than the others. More modern, more upbeat.Less afraid to step on some someones toes. Especially the Masters which is so phony it makes me want to upchuck. There is so much sugar thrown about that if I had diabetes I would go into diabetic shock. To many stuffy old farts. I have too many of those around me now.

I wish ferehty could anounce all glof tournaments.

I think he got in trouble last year at the Australian Masters though. He was on air a lot then on Friday said "These greens are smaller than a pigmeys nipple" and I didnt hear him the rest of the weekend.

The best line from Feherty when asked if the rough was long. "it's so long it's fornicating with my shoelaces".
