USGA Wants the Non-Sophisticated Golf Fan
By mustang6560 on 8/9/13

Why did the USGA ink its new broadcast partnership deal with FOX?

To attract the non-sophisticated sports fans who watch FOX.
Glen Nager, the president of the USGA, who worked on the FOX deal with Davis and another USGA executive, Sarah Hirshland, said on Thursday afternoon that golf wants, and needs, to reach those football fans and NASCAR fans and baseball fans and soccer fans. Sean Hannity fans, no doubt, too. Nager liked the fact that the FOX executives were recreational golfers and not golf experts. The USGA was looking for something else.

"We have golfing sophistication," Nager said. What FOX brought, among other things, was a boffo proposal to promote the U.S. Open, the other championships and to help make golf more of the mainstream sporting culture.
I'm starting to regret my decision to join the USGA. The $25 I spent on my membership is much more valuable to me than to a billion dollar non-profit.

Oh dear god, that is the last thing we need is more chuckleheads on the golf course. One can not get around in < 4 hours anymore. The "mash potato guy heard on every telivised tee shot indicates that the PGA already has that fan watching.

As marketing goes... it's a great idea. At last, a little strait forwardness from the USGA. haha.

Let's all make suggestions as to how to make USGA-run tournaments more appealing to the non-sophisticated golf fan.

Cheer Leaders on the 1st tee - "Tiger, Tiger, he's our man, if he can't hit the fairway, no one can!"

I'm seeing the Beverly hillbillies in their cut off jeans , nascar tee shirts and mullet haircuts out on the range learning how to play and teaching their nephew/son. After the first good hit saying that one was for Dale may he rest in peace. ......ok that was prob wrong on many levels, but I am from Alabama and see these people all the time...mainly at Walmart.

Great, more a$$holes that think its ok to play a radio in their cart. Loud enough to hear one fairway over.

Instead of "GET IN THE HOLE" or "MASHED POTATOES", it will be "FREEEEBIRRRRRDDDD"

Reaching new "less sofisticated" people isnt a bad thing if they do it right. But Im not going to hold my breath on the USGA doing it right.

I mean if they said "ok we're going to have fans watching that are new and we need to teach proper golf to. Lets really force the pace of play this year, to show the new fans 5 hours isnt acceptible."

And other things like that.

If the USGA wants chuckleheads with bad jokes, all they need to do is hire Chris Berman away from ESPN for a week. I thank God for giving engineers the capability if inventing the mute button.

I HATE FOX!! They have made Baseball unwatchable, with their fake crowd noise and the ball-hitting-the-bat sounds. What's next, Gordon Ramsey in the tower?
