Presidents Cup, Day 1
By Torleif Sorenson on 10/4/13

While Thursday's major news stories both originated from Washington D.C., the Presidents Cup got underway at Muirfield Village Golf Club in the comparatively sleepy Columbus suburb of Dublin, Ohio. Going into the event this morning, three "main story-lines" were prevalent widely discussed out there for anyone who wanted to talk about them:

  1. The Presidents Cup is regarded by more than a few as a "snoozefest";
  2. The International team might need to win in order for the event to remain relevant;
  3. Greg Norman is not happy to be not involved.

With a somewhat bizarre Wednesday evening opening ceremony out of the way, off they went.

Part of the reason the one-point separation is interesting is because the U.S. led in five matches and the other was all-square when a 90-minute weather delay began at 2:38 p.m. ET. But when the weather (and the proverbial smoke) cleared, Schwartzel and Oosthuizan had upset Mickelson and Bradley. Meanwhile, Mahan and Snedeker lost to Canadian rookie Graham DeLaet and Aussie Jason Day.

But for Day, this Presidents Cup is something of a "home game"; he and his wife (the former Ellie Harvey of Lucas, Ohio) are members at Muirfield Village.

International Team captain Nick Price has decided to keep all of his Thursday pairings together for Friday, perhaps hoping that time will aid chemistry (and saving us writers a boat-load of time):

Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs know that the weather delay was done on purpose and planned by Roger Goodell.
