Rory Shoots 63 in Dubai
By Torleif Sorenson on 1/30/14

We're still very early on in 2014 and it's just one round of the current European Tour event. But coming off an upset victory over Adam Scott at Australian Open, Rory McIlroy seems to be turning things around after a dreadful 2013 season. In the first round of the European Tour's Omega Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club, the "Holywood Matinee Idol" blistered the course for a bogey-free 63 on Thursday. Starting his round on the 10th hole, McIlroy reeled off birdies at 12, 13, and 14, playing the second nine in five-under 32. And then he calmly stroked home an eagle at the par-5 3rd hole as part of a 31 on the par-35 opening nine.

McIlroy gained his first-ever professional victory at this event in 2009, when he was just 19, and has three top-ten finishes here since. So even with the world's number-one player (Tiger Woods) breathing down his proverbial neck, McIlroy obviously feels comfortable here and finds himself with a two-shot lead over Edoardo Molinari. The kid sounded comfortable, too, in his his post-round press gaggle:
"It was good. It was really nice. I played really well from tee to green, drove the ball great again; I think I only missed a couple of fairways and only missed one green where I had to really get it up and down.

"I took advantage of how I am driving the ball and just need to do more of the same the next three days."
If McIlroy has, indeed, solved his on-course and equipment issues, and he wins this tournament, could this be the harbinger of a big comeback in 2014?

He could be the next Tigger Woods.

I caught a few minutes of the encore coverage and Rors looks good. I am excited about his golf season.

I'm so rooting for Rory's return to glory. It's immensely fun to watch him when he's feeling it. Those romps at the majors. People forget how badly he was abusing Augusta before his Sunday implosion back in 2011. I remember watching him on the 72nd hole at Kiawah in the 2012 PGA. He just stepped up to the tee box and ripped driver on an aggressive line with no hesitation like a boss.
