Tiger Has Surgery, Will Miss Masters
By Torleif Sorenson on 4/1/14
Tiger Woods will miss The Masters Tournament for the first time ever.

Late Tuesday morning, he announced that he underwent successful microdiscectomy surgery for a pinched nerve that has obviously been bothering him for several months. The surgery was performed Monday by a neurosurgeon, Dr. Charles Rich, in Park City, Utah. Woods issued the following statement on his web site:
"After attempting to get ready for the Masters, and failing to make the necessary progress, I decided, in consultation with my doctors, to have this procedure done.

"I'd like to express my disappointment to the Augusta National membership, staff, volunteers and patrons that I will not be at the Masters. It's a week that's very special to me. It also looks like I'll be forced to miss several upcoming tournaments to focus on my rehabilitation and getting healthy.

"I'd also like to thank the fans for their support and concern. It's very kind and greatly appreciated. This is frustrating, but it's something my doctors advised me to do for my immediate and long-term health."

I'm holding onto hope it is. I even googled the Dr to see if he is real. And he is a neurologist in ut.

Even not playing, this won't prevent the announcers from force-feeding his name down our throats the entire tournament.

I'd probably feel safer coming out as a homosexual Neo-nazi, but whatever. I like watching the guy play. I am a Tiger Woods fan. I celebrate the guy's entire catalog (of wins).

I'll miss Tiger not being at any major. I've only watched him compete in 12. 0/12, now I guess 0/13... tic toc tic toc.

I don't really care for him as a person. But I do like watching him play when he is on his game. It just looks so easy.

I'm not a fan, but now i'd rather he play the Masters. With Tiger being injured, he'll probably be getting more attention than had he actually played.

And the fact that he has a better closing rate than Mariano Rivera when tied or leading going into the final round, to me is his most impressive stat.

As a golf fan, this doesn't bother me as much as it used to. I don't think he would have been in contention, and I hate watching networks eat up tv time with Tiger when he isn't in contention.

I am a big Tiger fan. No one has come close to making golf exciting like he has over the last two decades. No one. Not Phil, not Rory, not Ernie, no one. However, the field has gotten much better as a result of the bar he set. You don't have to like Tiger as a person, but if you are a fan of golf, you have to acknowledge what he did for the game.

The Master's has always been my favorite tourney to watch, but won't be as interesting to me this year. Though I will still watch it and root for maybe Phil or Bubba, or someone else who has a good story, I won't give up my afternoon round of golf like I would have had Tiger been in contention.

I have had several problems over the years that are connected and caused other problems. I had 5 scopes over the years on my left knee and eventually a total knee replacement. Unknowingly I favored my knee and transferred all of my weight to my right side, This threw out my hip and misaligned my spine. Eventually I had a pin in my hip and a spinal fusion to correct those problems. Mind you, this was all done in an effort to relieve pain from the problem knee.. I no longer could transfer my weight properly , could no longer make as full turn on the back swing and could not complete my follow through. .Everything was to improve my life style and to allow me to continue to play the game without pain. I had to find a way around the problems I had created for myself. Tiger's decision to have surgery was his only decision at this time. If he is going to continue to play he will have to modify his swing. He will never be able to play the same way he has in the past. Only time will tell.
