GD's Paulina Cover Ignites Firestorm
By Torleif Sorenson on 4/4/14
Earlier this week, we told you about Golf Digest magazine putting celebrity girlfriend Paulina Gretzky on the cover of their May 2014 issue. Now, LPGA players and others are blasting Golf Digest for the move — and editor-in-chief Jerry Tarde's response is rather weak:
"Sports figures, celebrities and models have appeared on Golf Digest covers since the magazine's beginning. Paulina ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene today, and she has a compelling story to tell. She also might get some new people interested in the game."Paulina Gretzky, golf celebrity? LPGA players aren't buying that story.
USA Today's Steve DiMeglio points out that the last actual LPGA player to appear on a GD cover was Lorena Ochoa — way back in 2008. Of the three women who have graced GD's cover in the last twelve months, only Golf Channel's Holly Sonders has any competitive experience. She was a member of the Michigan State University Lady Spartans golf team that won the 2007 Big Ten Championship. The other two were celebrity models — Kate Upton and Paulina.
Likewise, Paulina's Twitter page does nothing toward portraying her as a humble, feet-on-the-ground woman who isn't too full of herself and her appearance:
Paulina's fiancé, PGA Tour player Dustin Johnson, didn't make matters any better on Thursday. He shot an opening-round 80 at the Shell Houston Open and promptly withdrew.

Hmm, it is disappointing from the LPGA standpoint, but if they would wear skimpier clothing when they played.....and only the good looking ones......
Matt McGee says:
Six years since an LPGA player has been on the cover of GD? That makes me question the intelligence of the GD editorial staff even more than the Gretzky cover does.
Frankly, I would love it if both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine would highlight at least one, if not more LPGA Tour players each and every month, with those girls gracing the cover 30-40% of the time. Most of us can learn a lot more from the way they play than we can from the PGA guys. We can certainly relate better to the girls' games.
I enjoy watching the LPGA. If their Tour came close by my area, I would definitely go see them play. In addition to some awesome golfers, there are quite a few cuties too. What's not to like?
On another note, I have a feeling Dustin Johnson is going to take a beating for this, one way or another.
That might be why he WD'ed this week Doug. Personally ,if Holly Sonders played , I could watch her all day regardless what she shot.
I'm with Ceebee... holly sonders whenever possible.
She's a Butter Face.
Bet you Lexi Thompson will be on June's cover now.
