Karen Paolozzi Makes The Cut
By Torleif Sorenson on 6/24/14
Karen Paolozzi made a bit of meritorious PGA of America history on Monday in Myrtle Beach.
The Indiana University alum is the First Assistant Golf Professional at the very private Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. This week, she is competing in the annual PGA Professional National Championship, being held at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club and the nearby Grand Dunes Resort Course.
Paolozzi is only the third female ever to participate in the championship and, on Monday, became only the second female (after Suzy Whaley) to make the 36-hole cut, shooting 75-71 = 146, just six shots off the lead. On the second nine, she shot a blistering 32, which included a lovely chip-in from behind the green at the 10th hole (see 1:38 in the video below):
"I'm very happy with the round. Today's conditions were different. There was a little bit more of a breeze, but it wasn't as hot. Yesterday was just so sticky and hot. The breeze actually felt good. It made the club selection a little more difficult, but you just have to decide what you're going to do and do it — and hope that it's correct.Paolozzi played from a set of tees totaling only about 900 yards shorter than the men on both courses; the Dunes Golf & Beach Club is set for 7,286 yards, while the nearby Resort Club at Grand Dunes is playing at 7,191 yards.
If she finishes among the top 20, she will qualify for the PGA Championship at Valhalla in August.
Round 3 of the PGA Professional National Championship will be televised on Golf Channel this afternoon, beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT, and on GC's Golf Live Extra.

She made the cut on day 3 but her ride appears to be coming to an end. She trails the guys in 20th place by 6 shots so it will be difficult to make it into the top 20.
Why is she playing from a different set of tees? Is this a "handicapped" tournament?
