Who Is Brooke Henderson?
By Torleif Sorenson on 6/26/14
Brooke Henderson is a 16-year-old amateur golfer from Smiths Falls, Ontario, a town about 45 miles southwest of Ottawa.
And while golfers like Michelle Wie, Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson, and Lydia Ko have been dominating the headlines in women's golf, you should expect to hear more about Henderson — and not just because she is the reigning Canadian Women's Amateur champion and the second-ranked female amateur golfer in the world.
On Wednesday afternoon, just three days after finishing T-10 and low amateur at the U.S. Women's Open at Pinehurst, Henderson won a Canadian Women's Tour 36-hole event in Niagara Falls, Ontario. She shot 69-66 = 135 on the Battlefield Course at Legends on the Niagara, to win by five shots over American pro Stephanie Connelly.
By winning, Henderson has earned an exemption into the Canadian Women's Open, which will be played in August at London Hunt & Country Club.
This is actually not the first time Henderson has won a professional event; she captured another CWT tournament in Quebec two years ago. The Canadian Women's Open is not just Canada's national championship; it is also a big deal on the LPGA tour.
Expect to hear, read, and see more of Brooke Henderson in the next few years — on her own merits.
