Ryder Cup Update From Captain Tom
By Torleif Sorenson on 7/3/14
United States Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson gave a press conference at the Greenbrier, where he is not only the professional emeritus, but also scouting players who are likely to make the team. Among them are three-time winner Jimmy Walker, 20-year-old sensation Jordan Spieth, and Patrick Reed, whose two victories on tour this year have been somewhat overshadowed by his claim of being one of the "top five players in the world."
Watson also extended invitations to "15 to 20" U.S. players to join him in a reconnaissance trip to the Centenary Course at Gleneagles in Scotland, although he pointed out that all but four or five are either playing the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities, or at the Scottish Open.
It didn't take long for reporters to ask about the possibility of Watson selecting Tiger Woods as a captain's pick:
"As I've said in front of the press, if he's playing well and he's healthy, he's on the team. Right now he's way down the list as far as points, but who wouldn't pick Tiger Woods to be on your Ryder Cup team? That is the question to everybody. Who wouldn't pick him?"The problem is, what happens if he misses much of the FedExCup playoffs? One astute reporter posed this as a follow-up question.
"He'll be considered less of a pick then if he didn't have a track record going into the Ryder Cup, of course," Watson said. "He'd be the first to tell you, 'I haven't been playing.' Like I said, how he's been playing and if he's healthy, those are the two factors that I'll weigh in choosing. That's just common sense in my opinion."As of today, Woods is in 208th place in the FedExCup standings; only the top 125 are invited to participate in the playoffs.

I know the Ryder Cup has evolved into this cut-throat life-or-death affair, but I still think of it as an exhibition, and exhibitions are all about having fun right? And let's face it, golf events are more fun when the best player of the generation is there. It's not even a Tiger thing, could say the same thing about that dud Nick Faldo in his heyday. Let us save the phony consternation for matters that are actually serious.
Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown, Engines on.
to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule
if you dare.
Sorry Beef, couldn't help myself.

Falcon, when I wrote the article, I *almost* referred to him above as "Major Tom" in quotation marks. Great minds think alike. :-P
