Brian Harman Breaks Through
By Torleif Sorenson on 7/14/14
Last Friday, we told you about third-year PGA Tour player Brian Harman, who had to use local teacher and basketball coach Jay Hatch as an emergency caddie on Thursday. At that time, your humble correspondent wondered what would happen if Harman went on to win the tournament.
Let those questions begin.
In his 88th PGA Tour start (and using regular caddie Scott Tway), Harman followed up his Thursday 63 with rounds of 68, 65, and 66 to capture his first big-league victory at the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run. With the victory the five-foot-seven Georgia native punched his ticket to the Open Championship this week at Royal Liverpool, along with the 2015 Masters and the Tournament of Champions next January in Hawaii.
"At the beginning of this year, I kind of caught myself trying to imitate too many guys at once. And I just kind of made the decision to try and be a little bit better version of myself. To do the things that I know how to do and to see where that took me."
Yeah, no kidding, Brian. Welcome to the winner's circle. Have a good time at Hoylake.
And surely, he also made at least one new friend in the Quad Cities area — in the person of Jay Hatch.

Big talent in a small body. He sure can get the ball out there. He had his emotions well under control and never wavered on the way to the title.Very impressive.
