Rory's Dad Cashes In
By Torleif Sorenson on 7/22/14
Rory McIlroy was not the only winner that emerged from the 143rd Open championship — his dad made out pretty well, too.
One of the more interesting stories to emerge from Royal Liverpool this past weekend was that McIlroy's father, Gerry, placed a £200 bet in 2004 with Ladbrokes, a British gambling and sports betting concern. The bet was that his son would win the Open Championship within ten years. The given odds at the time were 500-to-1.
With today's exchange rate, £180,000 works out to US $307,293.30. Apparently, it really does pay to have faith in people!
Not bad, Dad.
