2014 Ryder Cup: Team Europe Roster
By Torleif Sorenson on 9/2/14
Below is the player roster for the 2014 Ryder Cup Team Europe, as finalized on September 2, 2014. The top nine positions qualified on points; Team Europe captain Paul McGinley's three wildcard selections are in positions 10-12 (green background). One of those rookies was a wildcard selection, but has played awfully well in 2014 — leaving captain McGinley little choice but to select him.
Captain McGinley, born in Dublin, Ireland, played on the winning 2002, 2004, and 2006 European Ryder Cup teams. His personal Ryder Cup record is 2-2-5.
Assistant captain Des Smyth from Ireland (Drogheda, County Louth) played for Team Europe in 1979 and 1981, the first two Ryder Cups in which players from Continental Europe participated. He went 2-5-0 overall.
Assistant captain Sam Torrance from Largs, Scotland played in eight Ryder Cups (1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1995) and captained the winning 2002 team.
United States captain Tom Watson announced his three wildcard selections Tuesday evening.

Tim Horan says:
I am not overly surprised that Westwood has been picked. His early season results were not encouraging but of late he seems to be getting back to form and his chipping and putting are much improved. Looking at the number of Ryder Cups each player in the above team have clocked up I am sure that Lee's eight appearances makes him an "elder statesman" to balance the enthusiasm of youth.
