Could Derek Win? Fat(hauer) Chance
By Torleif Sorenson on 9/22/14
Derek Fathauer will spend the 2015 season on the PGA Tour. Coming into Sunday, the University of Louisville alum had already sewn up his tour card, but had been unsuccessful in trying to capture his first win as a professional on the Web.com Tour. He had gone T-9, T-16, and T-8 over the last three weeks.
On Sunday on the Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass, Fathauer held strong, even after a bogey at the 17th hole. Fathauer held on to win by one stroke over rookie Zac Blair and well-known veteran Jason Gore.
The complete list of the 50 Web.com Tour graduates who will head to the PGA Tour is here. Fathauer finished second on the top 50 list, behind only Abbotsford, BC native Adam Hadwin who, like Fathauer, attended the University of Louisville.
Carlos Ortiz, a Dallas-area resident born in Guadalajara, Mexico, was right behind Fathauer in third overall on the Top 50. But in August, Ortiz had already earned his way in by virtue of winning the WinCo Foods Portland Open, thereby gaining a battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour.
Other notables include Colt Knost, rookie Richard Sterne from South Africa, the aforementioned Gore, and a rookie named Sam Saunders from Fort Collins, Florida who happens to have Arnold Palmer as a grandfather. Also making the leap is the ultra-adventurous John Peterson, who is unafraid of using a major Interstate highway as a practice range — and is also unafraid of alligators on the golf course.
Sean O'Hair, J.J. Henry, and Heath Slocum return to the big show, while Sweden's David Lingmerth and the very experienced Euro Tour player Alex Cejka also secured their cards on Sunday.
