Perspective - At a Horrible Cost
By Torleif Sorenson on 10/9/14
After all the complaints, back-biting, and second-guessing surrounding United States Ryder Cup team's loss at Gleneagles, some people close to the story need to "come back to earth," so to speak.
But learning this way is much too tragic.
On Tuesday morning in Grand Rapids, Michigan, South Christian High School mathematics teacher and girls' golf coach Rodney VanDyke was killed while riding his road bicycle to the school. The 54-year-old was struck from behind by the driver of an Acura four-door sedan.
As if that was not terrible enough, the girls' golf team was scheduled to play in their Division Three regional high school golf championship, held on Wednesday at Diamond Springs Golf Course in Hamilton, Michigan. After a short meeting, the team decided to play in the tournament anyway.
They won the regional championship, shooting a combined 357 to second-place Lake Odessa Lakewood's 375. Now, they advance to next week's Division Three final at Forest Akers GC, on the campus of Michigan State University.
Regardless of how the Division Three final plays out, nobody at South Christian is likely to forget Rodney VanDyke. But to say that we at oobgolf still wish Tuesday's tragic episode had never happened is a gross understatement.
