Nicklaus Grandson Survives Motorcycle Crash
By Torleif Sorenson on 7/25/13
As reported by SB Nation, Florida State University football player Nick O'Leary, whose grandfather is Jack Nicklaus, survived a scary motorcycle collision on May 2. O'Leary clearly had the right of way when the driver of a Lexus pulled out of the driveway at 2616 Mission Road in Tallahassee, failed to yield, and pulled into O'Leary's path.

The official police report blames the driver of the Lexus for causing the crash. This is logical; if you watch the surveillance video captured from a Star Metro bus, which was also damaged in the crash, the Lexus driver not only blocked O'Leary's line of travel, but also obstructed the oncoming lane of traffic.

What is really remarkable is that O'Leary walked away from the crash, although Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher said O'Leary was "banged up for about a month."

We are exceptionally grateful that O'Leary was not seriously injured or killed. While we're at it, minus 50,000 points to the Lexus driver not just for needlessly causing that crash, but also for a very sloppy right turn. You need remedial driver training!

Sloppy right turn sure, but wasn't this an unavoidable collision? Even if the right turn had been properly executed, the motorcyclist would've still been approaching way too fast. At the moment the automobile enters the left side of the frame, there looks to be considerable distance between it and the oncoming motorcycle. At that point the car would have been plainly visible to the rider. The bike might've had right of way, but the fact that he couldn't avert a collision suggests that he was going way too fast. Look I don't care either way, I just think its weird how this article is being framed on account of it involving the grandson of a golf legend.

LB the bus driver told the cops that in his/her opinion the motorcycle was drastically speeding.

Judging by the car that came before, the white one, he wasn't going that much faster or fast at all. Depends what the speed limit is on the street. I'd wager 35 or 40. Looks legit. Not sure what the car pulling out was doing. It was like they stopped and waited for him to hit. weird.

The lexus driver was probably a Gator.

From the camera clocks it looks like the car starts out at 16:04 and is fully in the lane at 16:05 and impact occurs right at 16:07. 3 seconds isn't alot of time at 35 mph

The Lexus driver is horrible. But the kid is speeding. I'd wager the speed limit on that street, with residential driveways, can't be more than 30. He didn't even have time to lay the bike down. Based on my experience, he's extremely lucky to have only sustained minor injuries.

can you post more FSU football stories so i can go to 1 website to get my info?

Anything about how Jameis is progressing? He is the person who will be potentially throwing the ball to Jack Nicklaus's grandson, so its golf related.

Fish: I'm much more likely to post a detailed analysis about why Patrice Bergeron should have been awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy instead of Patrick Kane.

Unfortunately auto drivers just don't see motorcyclists most of the time. I used to be pretty hardcore into riding, commuting and stuff. Around here, it isn't very safe in the city. I still enjoy the back country/mountain rides. Come to think of it since I started golfing the bike is just sitting there, rotting.

I just got a chance to get on a computer where I could watch the video. Ouch! Yes he is VERY lucky to not be in serious condition after this. He did look to me to be going pretty quick, fwiw.

Tor, not sure if I was clear but by "bike" I meant motorbike. I do ride a bicycle a little bit but my commuting days were all under petrol power.

Hmmn. After a few views I noticed: compare the speed of the white (Prius?) driver comes down the street in the beginning to the rate the motorcyclist is going, looks like similar speed? Perhaps the video wide lens and frame rate distort things...

His only place to react/swerve would have been into a bus. The car driver that pulled out is wide out of proper lane.

I sold my donorcycle after a couple of close calls where the automobile drivers nearly caused me to crash. One woman made eye contact with me, then pulled right out in front of me, I skidded to a stop 6 inches from her door, with her still staring at me. Crazy.

Duke of Hazards says:
He's going quite fast until about 5-6 car lengths before impact, then hits the brakes and decelerates quite a bit. Just before impact, his back wheel comes up and he's going substantially slower at impact. But at the point where the Lexus pulls out, he's definitely speeding.

WTF kinda right turn was that? That looked like the lady in the Escalade trying to turn into the course driveway this afternoon as I was leaving. I had to pull up and to the right to make a left onto the road! I can't bang on O'Leary, we all speed a little, including me. Glad he's okay after that.
