Lowlight Reel: Justin Rose & Hudson Swafford Edition
By mustang6560 on 9/17/13

Justin Rose (above) and Hudson Swafford (below) learned a valuable lesson over the weekend at the BMW Championship and Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship, respectively -- do not take a practice swing directly behind your golf ball. If you do decide to take a practice swing directly behind your golf ball, do not take a divot. Both players were assessed a one-stroke penalty.

Let this be a lesson to all oobers.

To happen twice in one tournament what are odds of that? Personally that should not be a penalty, just put the ball back and go with it but they would need to change the rules for that to happen. What advantage were they trying to get? None, rules like this make the game seem archaic.

@GS7, I disagree. The solution is not to change the Rule and allow a player to move his ball. Instead, have the player take the practice swing away from the ball.

I dislike it when people take practice swings and take a divot. Too often the divot is neither replaced from the practice swing nor the actual swing. Who hasn't played a course and found several identical divot holes all clustered together. Two or three practices swings and then the real thing. Grrrrr!

@bk And that seems to be exactly what Swafford did. He knocked the divot away while he was talking to the official instead of replace it!

@bk I completely understand trust me I do but it seems harsh when the ball moves accidentally in the fairway or green and be assessed a penalty if clearly there wasn't any intent to gain an advantage.

What did these guys expect swinging behind the ball like that? But of course there's the tv guys with the coddling reaction--"Ooooh, it's a cruel game sometimes" as if the ball somehow jumped in the way of Rose's divot out of nowhere. Okay.

The penalty should have been a slow, merciless, death!!! Ha, ha , ha. Looks like my chances of becoming NYC's mayor just took a huge hit.

Sometimes people do dumb things. That's just dumb. You'd think a pro woulda seen that coming. Reminds me of the recent robbery at a convenience store. The thug pulls the trigger on the clerk twice and the gun just goes click. So he turns the gun around and looks down the barrel and pulls the trigger. this time it worked.
