Bubba's Mea Culpa
By Torleif Sorenson on 8/20/14
Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson did not have a very fun time at the PGA Championship — and it showed.
He shot 70-72-73-72=287 to finish at +3, tied for 65th. He was a non-factor, except in turning the air blue and having tantrums. At point one, he was even caught having caddie Ted Scott tee up a ball for him.
For a few years now, golf fans have griped about Watson's on-course attitude, especially toward caddie Ted Scott. Readers of this web site had plenty to say after Bubba's meltdown at Hartford last summer.
But this scathing column by veteran Golf Digest contributor Dave Kindred proved the old adage that sunlight is the best disinfectant.
Apparently, word got back to Bubba:
Watson also noted one nice gesture to a PGA Championship attendee:
"I've got to get a new umbrella this week. Because it started raining right when we putted out [on Sunday]. I was walking across the bridge and a guy goes, 'Bubba, can I have your umbrella?' And I was like, you know what, that's a good question. So I just gave it to him. I was like, 'I'm done. You need it more than I do.'"And at least he gave his caddie a nice bonus for all those on-course tantrums.

Sometime Bubba acts like a petulant teen ager. He has a lot of growing up to do. It hurts his game.It took Colin Montgomery years to learn that it is not a good idea to have the fans turn on you.He has to learn that he earns adulation with his great golf but he can throw the whole thing away with some of the stupid things he does.Listen to his pre game interviews and it is easy to tell how he is going to play.Negativity is his worse enemy and he strikes out at everyone when things don't go his way. What a waste of energy.
I can't stand negativity. It just takes all the oxygen out of the room. I used to know a guy who was always beefing about something, what a loser. I ran into him the other day, and all he could do was complain about all his ailments. He looked 100 years old.
Funny, no one posted articles like this when Eldrick was whining about everything.
I guess that would have been racist.
Also, can you post what he says in the video so I don't have to watch it? I remember when journalism used to include words.
I miss Johnny Carson.

"Not competing in the Long Drive was the first mistake. That was the selfish part, because I didn't agree with it, but there’s a lot of things that I don't agree with that I do.
"Then you look at it from my attitude on the golf course. Because I want something so bad, that's not the reason to do that. You still just bite your tongue and compete at a high level, don't show emotion. I take it overboard because I want something so bad. I want to be considered a great player. I want to win golf tournaments and I've got to learn on that.
“And then my language was not good. That's a different topic and childish again. It's all childish stuff and trying to mature and become a better man. Obviously, I take it on the chin. It was my fault. Everything's my fault and I should be bigger and stronger and better than that."
