Want to see what 3 years of practice can do for your golf game? Look no further than this week's GoW Deborah Donchess. She almost missed out on golf because of a coin flip- but fortunately she found her way and is now an 11 handicap.
How old are you and what's your occupation?
56 - Retired
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
3 1/2 years ago. My handicap is 11.5.
How often do you play?
2 to 3 times a week.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
I had my first hole-in-one in June 2007. It was on my league play day so I won the hole-in-one pot (helped to cover my bar tab from the hole-in-one). It was a par 3, approximately 80 yards. I used my sand wedge. It was the second time I had used the club. Needless to say, a couple of my golf friends went out and bought a set of the same clubs. Very exciting.
What is your best golf memory?
The first time I was able to play with my two brothers at our family reunion.
What is your "home" course?
Briarwood Golf Club
What ball do you play?
I prefer a soft ball but I play with whatever is on sale.
Clubs?
Callaway X20 irons, Callaway 10.5 driver, Ping 3 wood, Lady Accent 5 wood, Ping 22 degree hybrid, putter - Never Compromise
Favorite pro?
Male - Tiger Woods, Female - Natalie Gulbis
Favorite course you've played?
Hole Tennis & Golf Club
Dream course you've yet to play?
We are going to Scottsdale, Arizona next month and I hope to play
The Boulders.
Best round ever- and what course?
78 at a tournament at
Oak Knoll Country Club. I had my first eagle and won my division.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
Chipping & pitching.
Tell me a story.
I was looking for a new sport to pick up in my late 30's, I decided to flip a coin, heads for tennis, tails for golf. It turned up heads so I picked up tennis and played for several years until I had a serious foot injury. Missing tennis terribly, I needed to find another sport and decided to give golf a go. I was hooked immediately. I love being outdoors and enjoying the company of other golfers. Big bonus - it's a great way to spend more time with my husband (who didn't play tennis), plus I've never played a golf course I didn't love.
Thanks!
