Andrew Karvonen a.k.a. karvoload
How old are you and what's your occupation?
23 years old, I'm a tactical aircraft maintainer for F-16's (aka crew chief) in Phoenix, Arizona.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
14, my mom bought me a set at a rummage with a five gallon bucket of balls. I'd hit every ball into the corn fields surrounding our house, then go pick them up and do it again. Handicap is 3.
How often do you play?
2 to 3 times a week. It's nice to be in the USAF because the base golf course is affordable.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
My girlfriend was caddying for me(not for her golf expertise). I was hitting my third shot at a 550 yard par five. The ball was waist level, almost in a bunker, where I was now standing to hit it, next to the green, about sixty feet from the hole. I made my 35" putter, a 14" putter and somehow willed it in to shoot 35 on the front 9. My girlfriend loved the eagle! She thought I was Tiger Woods. Now whenever I go golfing she asks me how many eagles did you make today. LOL
What is your best golf memory?
My best golf memory is playing practice rounds with my three best friends in high school before our golf matches. Tons of dumb sayings we still use today were made up there.
What is your "home" course?
My home course now is Falcon Dunes Golf Club in Glendale, AZ. My real home course is Rivermoore Country Club in Waterford, Wisconsin.
What ball do you play?
I like Titleist Pro v1's but for three dollars a ball, you'd think the covers would be more durable. But I do love it when "hacks" buy them, loose them, and I get to find them on the course, brand spankin new. It's like finding money, but better.
I love my Tour Burner Driver, Nike cci irons, & Ping Tour wedges. My Ping Crazee putter is deadly, I'm surprised it's not illegal cause I make everything I look at with it. Can u say drainoooo!
My favorite pro is Steve Stricker, because he's from Wisconsin, and his attitude toward the game is amazing. Always cool, calm, and collective. I wanna snap every club in my bag when I hit a bad shot. I don't even know what I'd do if I had hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line like they do.
Favorite course you've played?
My brother and I played Whistling Straits in 2005. It was awesome, especially when the fog rolled in off of Lake Michigan. They didn't have the big horned sheep out that day though which was disappointing. I wanted to mess with one.
Dream course you've yet to play?
Well, everyone dreams of Augusta National, especially during April, but Pebble Beach is my realistic dream course.
Best round ever- and what course?
I've shot 70 a few times. Falcon Golf Club, Falcon Dunes, Maryvale Golf Course. But I can't seem to bust into those beautiful 60's.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
I would like to get a better grasp on the mental aspect of the game. For the level I play at, my talent is fine. It's just not having the concentration to finish a round.
Tell me a story.
A guy I know from high school used to caddy at a hoidy toidy golf club in Chicago during the summer. When we came back to school that following summer he had a picture of himself, in between the best golfer of all time and the best basketball player of all time. Yes I said it. This son of a @#!$% caddied for Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. They both tipped him $400.00 a piece and Michael gave him one of his cigars. He said Tiger lost a lot of money to Michael. I guess Tiger gave Mike a few strokes!!!!!! Good thing he had a picture, cause who in the world would ever believe that one?!

You need to post your friends picture, I would love to see the day Tiger handed over a $400 tip!
Ha! I thought the same thing! I was suprised to hear he didn't just shake his hand and figure tht was MORE than enough.
Very entertaining Golfer of the Week story. Thank you for your service to the country.
Jake Bogardus says:
@ Todd and Kick, Ya everyone knows Tiger isn't a big tipper, but he's still subject to peer pressure especially coming from MJ so if MJ is handing over 400 bucks do you really think Tiger would give significantly less. I don't think so
Another good golfer of the week! My father my father had a similar job in the airforce during Vietnam before I was born. You are a good golfer and a good person for your service to the USA.
Great to read about our true American heroes - those that have volunteered to step up and be there when called to protect us all and our freedom!!! I am retired from the Air Force and my best wishes to you Andrew!!! God Bless You....
I appreciate your service! And your golf stories. Have a great summer, relax, and enjoy every moment on the course!
