Brad Canning a.k.a. bradcanning
He doesn't get out as much as he likes, but this week's Golfer of the Week is still a straight shooter. Check out what he thinks of Tiger Woods- and how he likes when he loses!
How old are you and what's your occupation?
I am 36 years old and I am the Pastor and Team Leader of a new church we started in Brooklyn about 2 years ago, Church! of Park Slope.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
I started playing when I was really small chasing my mom and dad around a golf course with a ball and a sawed off wedge. I played on and off growing up, but fell in love with the game in college. My handicap is about an 18, although I haven't tracked it in the past few years.
How often do you play?
I used to play weekly, but once we moved to Brooklyn and specifically when we started the new church, my playing time is almost non existent.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
I was playing a scrub course in Cincinnati walking with my wife Joy. She doesn't play much, but loves to walk with me when she gets the chance. I was on the 17th hole - a short par 5 and hit two poor shots. One in the deep rough off the tee less than 200 out and advanced the second less than 100 yards into the fairway. I wasn't loving the hole as you can imagine. But at about 200 out uphill I hit a nice little 3 iron. We watched as it bounced at the front of the green, and then roll up and disappear. I thought it had rolled off the back or into a dip in the green, but when Joy and I got to the green, the ball was in the hole! Eagle.
What is your "home" course?
Dyker Beach by the Verrazano Bridge in Brooklyn. This is actually where Tiger's dad first played/learned golf.
What ball do you play?
Titleist... proV after my birthday!
You Mean THESE Traps?!
Yes... Bethpage can be mean.
Favorite course you've played?
Bethpage Black- it destroyed me, but I loved every bit of it. I am not a long ball hitter. On a good drive, I might get 240. I remember a par 4 at the black course where I crushed my drive into the wind. I walked to my ball which was by the 220 yard marker. The green was probably 50 feet above me, 220 out, guarded by 4 of the biggest traps you have ever seen, and into the wind. I was sunk.
Dream course you've yet to play?
I would love to play Pebble Beach... of course.
Best round ever- and what course?
Not including my farm course experiences, I shot an 80 at Pebble Creek in Cincinnati.
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
I would like to play more often.
Tell me a story.
Even though I know Mr. Woods is the best golfer in the world... I don't like him and root against him and dream about the day when he falls... I know, not very nice.
