Your missing out on some cool charts...
Ryan Thompson a.k.a. whatwouldjerrydo
How old are you and what's your occupation?
33. I own a pool cleaning company.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
Before 2 1/2 years ago I had played less than 20 times. So I say I started 2 1/2 years ago.
I'm currently a 21.3, I hover around 20-23.
How often do you play?
I try to play everyday, I usually play 4-6 times a week. 2-4 9hole rounds and 1-2 18 hole rounds a week.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
I tend to remember my latest good shots. I was playing Brookside Golf Course #2 just the other day on 1-3-11 by myself. It was my first round of the year, I put my tee shot on number one just off the right side of the fairway up on a little mound. I was 155 out and had to wait along time for the group in front of me to clear the green. I pulled my trusty 7 iron and took a few practice swings while I waited. I started to question the yardage and went for my 6 iron instead, which had been repaired the day prior and had been out of my bag for at least 2 months. I struck it well and new mid flight I would be on the green somewhere. I pulled up to find my ball 3 feet from the cup, I sank the putt and made birdie for my first hole of 2011! Thanks and welcome back 6 iron.
What is your best golf memory?
This past year I took the week of my birthday off work and went on Golfcation. My best friend and I played 9 rounds in 7 days. It was one of the best weeks of my life and will always be a great golf memory.
What is your "home" course?
Altadena Golf Course- 9 hole par 35
Brookside Golf Course- 2 18 hole courses. The courses surround The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca. They actually use the courses to park cars on during rose bowl events. Its amazing how beautiful, how well-maintained, and how well the courses play even the day after having 40,000+ vehicles parked on them. It's a testament to the management and grounds crew at Brookside.
What ball do you play?
When I buy balls I go for DT Solo's, when those are all gone I play whatever is in the bag.
Taylormade r7 superquad 10.5 driver
Taylormade r7 3 and 5 woods
Taylormade r7 draw irons
Cleveland cg12 54 and 58 degree wedges
Ping Zing 5 putter.
Freddie "boom boom" Couples. Just a fun guy to watch play. Looks like he has no cares and all the time in the world when he plays.
Favorite course you've played?
The #2 E.O. Nay course at Brookside is my favorite to play. The nicest courses I've played are the Pete Dye courses at Lost Canyon Golf Club.
Dream course you've yet to play?
I would really love to play Pebble Beach with my dad before its to late. Other than that the list could go on and on. St. Andrews, Cypress Point, Bandon Dunes, Whistling Straights, Bethpage, Cape Kidnappers, Trump National, like I said I could go on and on.
Best round ever- and what course?
85. Brookside Golf Course #2
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
CONSISTENCY. I would love to get to a 18 handicap or better.
Tell me a story.
Myself, my friend Mike and another good friend of ours went to River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard, Ca to celebrate Mikes birthday. It's a 36 hole complex with a links style course and a lakes course. We planned on getting in all 36. We showed up on a cloudy Monday morning to maybe 5 or 6 cars in the parking lot. It had rained earlier and there was a rainbow literally over the clubhouse. I got out of the truck looked at Mike and said Happy Birthday bro its going to be a great day. We got about 6 holes into the first round when the sprinkles started, sprinkles turned into rain and bye the 15th it was thunder and lightning. We decided to stick it out, walking up to the teebox on 16 with drivers in hand the marshall came tearing up the path yelling "get back to the club house there was lightning in the area and we could get killed, what were we stupid or something." So we headed back to the 19th hole, had a dog and few beers and waited to see if the rain would pass or if we would be let back out to finish our round. About 4 beers later it had let up enough to back out and get in the finishing holes. Back at the club house our one friend decided he was cold, wet, and had enough. While I told Mike it was his b-day and we could leave if he wanted but I was in for another 18 rain or shine. After some convincing we headed out to the first hole on the second course. Buy the time we got to third hole the clouds had started to part, the sun was shinning through, the rainbows came out and we were the only two people on the entire 36 hole complex. We had the place to ourselves and the second part of the day couldn't have been more beautiful. We hit fairways, we sank putts, we made pars, it was as if the golf gods rewarded us our determination and love for this great game.
