Your missing out on some cool charts...
Steve McKern a.k.a. madmx99
How old are you and what's your occupation?
Pushing the 1/2 century mark (48) and lucky to be the Vice President, Administrative Services, for a life insurance company.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
First round of golf was in college and shot 72 (9 holes). Game was harder than it looked. I proceeded to get a little better over the years to get my current handicap to 10 (for 18).
How often do you play?
Not enough or as much as my wife lets me. In reality, probably twice a week.
Tell me about a great shot you've made.
I was playing in a scramble with 3 coworkers around 6 years ago at Stone Creek in Omaha. The first hole that we played was a par 5. We all teed off and used my drive (for once). The others hit, and I pulled out my 3 wood from 220 yards. It hit the front of the green and rolled up the slope to the second tier. I couldn’t see the ball. One of my partners thought it hit the flag, but the others thought I was full of &^%$. We drove up and found the ball in the bottom of the cup! Of course, I couldn’t hit a ball the rest of the day to save my life. That’s one I won’t forget.
What is your best golf memory?
We were playing Harvester in Des Moines with my oobgolf buddies, KeithH and Edjens. We got to the 18th hole which is a par 5 that goes in a U shape around the lake. Edjens hits the ball a ton off the tee thought, from the layout, that he could cut the corner and carry some of the lake. It had to be a 300 yard carry, but it didn’t look that far. His first swing probably missed by 5 yards from carrying. He reloaded and missed by 10 yards. His third, fourth, fifth, six, etc. seemed to get further and further away. He ran out of balls, and KeithH and I were digging balls out of our bag and laughing our butts off. He finally got tired in the teens somewhere and quit for the day. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard. I guess it’s remembering the fun that you had on golf trips with your buddies and how much you just enjoy playing.
What is your "home" course?
My “home” course would be Bent Tree Golf Course in Council Bluffs, IA. The course is very challenging ... especially with a south wind. It really is a “prairie” golf course. Really open with few trees, but a lot of tall grass and bunkers. It plays a lot of up and down hills and position golf. I got hooked up a few years ago with some of the members that are a blast to play with. That makes it even better.
What ball do you play?
I switch between Pro V1, NXT Tour, Srixon Z Star X, and Bridgestone 330 RX. I’ve liked all four. Sometimes, it’s good for a little change up once in a while.
Drivers: Callaway RAZR Hawk
Hybrids: Tour Edge Bazooka JMAX Iron-Wood
Hybrids: Nike SQ Machspeed
Hybrids: Nike VR Pro
Hybrids: Tour Edge Exotics XCG-4
Irons: Callaway Razr X
Putters: Odyssey Backstryke 2-Ball
Dustin Johnson – I love the guy’s game plus he handled all the adversity like a real pro.
Favorite course you've played?
I would say Wild Horse in Gothenburg, NE. It is out in the sandhills of Nebraska, and you get the feel of a links course. It sits out in the middle of nowhere which makes it easier also to get some tee times. Well worth the $50 green fees. You get the feel that you have escaped reality, and you are there just with your buddies.
Dream course you've yet to play?
No doubt – Augusta National. It would be a bucket list item. The awe of playing a course like that one time would be unbelievable.
Best round ever- and what course?
I would say 77 at my “home” course, Bent Tree. "Away" might be the 88 at Champions Run in Omaha the day after the Nationwide event was held, so we played the tips and the final round pin placements. I found out how good those guys are too!
What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
I would say that it would be my iron play from 125 and in. I need to get the ball closer to the pins to improve my scoring. I would love to hit the greens in regulation the same percentage that I hit fairways.
Tell me a story.
Once up a time ...kidding ... one of my embarrassing moments had to be when I went with some of my oobgolfers to Wild Horse. It was a 3 hour drive to get there. We get out of our vehicles to hit the course and change clothes. I grabbed my bag to change when edjens explained it was his bag. Well, it was …it seems when I picked him up, he happened to have the same bag I did. When we switched cars, I grabbed his by mistake. He thought I was being nice and didn’t think about picking up mine. So I played with what I had on to get in 18 holes and spent the evening at the local Pamida (small town Walmart) scrambling for some clothes. It wasn’t a pretty picture the next day. My buddies sure got a kick out of it.

nice shot! double eagle on a scramble is amazing! Funny story too, welcome to the GOW club!
Welcome to the GOW club. Hope we hear from you regularly!
Doesn't his picture in the story make him look like Dave from Storage Wars?
Duke of Hazards says:
congrats on GOW
Way to go Steve!
I am excited Steve was selected oobgolf GOW because now I can tell people I know a real life celebrity.
I was in the “B” group teeing off behind Steve when he made his double eagle in the scramble. It was slightly down hill so we could see the entire hole. They were two very nice looking shots. I was just a little frustrated that I had not even teed off yet and we were already three strokes down and an entire hole behind the group in front of us.
@srogers13.. too funny. I will make sure I remind him the next time we golf together...Yuuup!
Thank you, Thank you. What an honor to be named the GOW for oobgolf.
Damn, when I look at it, it does look like Dave from Storage Wars. *&^% Oh well, YUUUPPP!!!
Congrats Steve! So how did you guys make out on the scramble after your double eagle?
Finished 10 under... second place.
Way to Mad max. Yeah, I was in his group the day of the double eagle. It was our first hole of a scramble, and the course had scoreboard posting instantly on the golf carts. Everybody in the turney thought we were full of it, posting 3 under after 1. Great days. Congrats Steve!!!
Congratulations and welcome to the GOW club! Although I think there may be another congrats in order?? Are you the Steve M. from Iowa who was lucky enough to win the entry into the World Golf Am??
Holy *&^%, I won!!! Thanks, Nick!!! I'm in shock. Got any tips for me?
I LOL. Thanks for the stories and being GOW!
Torleif Sorenson says:
Steve, I'm envious of you because you got to play Wild Horse. When a car and the accompanying road-trip finally happen, I'm planning on playing Wild Horse on the way to Colorado Springs.
Torleif, you got to play it. Truly a links course. You won't regret it.
Congrats, Steve. Did you happen to go Buena Vista University in Storm Lake?
1hawkeye1, yes I did. 1982-83....did you also?
